The response from his players was immediate and emphatic. Just two minutes into the contest, Neto Borges’ teasing delivery found Emil Riis unmarked at the back post, and the striker made no mistake with a smart header to give the Robins an early lead.

Watford nearly found a quick reply moments later, and Vyner found himself in the spotlight.

An unfortunate touch from the defender fell kindly to Vivaldo Semedo inside the area, but the Watford forward blazed his effort over the bar, much to City’s relief. It proved to be a key moment, as Bristol City regained control and continued to dictate the play.

City doubled their advantage seven minutes before the break following a powerful midfield drive from Jason Knight.

The skipper surged forward before slipping the ball to Riis, who showed great awareness to turn provider, rolling a neat pass into the path of Anis Mehmeti.

From a tight angle, Mehmeti drilled the ball home to make it 2–0. Before halftime, Sam Bell nearly added a third, forcing an important save from Watford goalkeeper Nathan Baxter.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Bristol City sharp on the counter and ruthless in front of goal. Just after the hour mark, City struck again from a set piece.

Scott Twine’s pinpoint free-kick was met by Rob Atkinson, who rose highest to head home his third goal of the season and City’s third on the night.

Three minutes later, the hosts made it four. Joe Lumley went long, Borges bent a delightful pass behind Watford’s centre-backs, and Riis showed his composure by taking one touch before sliding the ball past Baxter.

Although Watford pulled one back through substitute Jack Grieves in the 74th minute, any hopes of a comeback were swiftly extinguished.

Riis completed a memorable hat-trick two minutes later, finishing calmly after new signing George Earthy picked him out with a clever pass. The goal capped a dominant display and took Riis’ tally to ten goals for the season.

Throughout the match, Zak Vyner remained solid at the back, contributing to City’s overall control and seeing out the game.
