The Super Eagles have swept aside all opposition so far, winning all four of their matches and scoring an impressive 12 goals along the way.

Their latest outing, a commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16, reinforced their status as the tournament’s most potent attacking force, with Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman at the heart of their forward line.

However, Nigeria’s preparations have been overshadowed by off-field distractions.

A dispute over delayed bonus payments for group-stage victories briefly threatened to derail their campaign, with reports of a possible player boycott emerging earlier in the week.

Calm was eventually restored after the funds were released, allowing the squad to travel to Morocco without further incident.

Confirming the resolution, Minister of State for Finance Doris Uzoka-Anitesaid:

“All group-stage bonuses have been fully released and cleared required regulatory stages. There will be no further administrative delays.”

Head coach Eric Chelle has also had to manage internal tensions following a visible disagreement between his forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during the Mozambique match.

Osimhen’s frustration over a missed pass led to an on-field confrontation and an early substitution, though the Nigerian camp insists the matter has since been resolved internally.

Algeria’s journey to the quarter-finals has been steadier and quieter. The Desert Foxes booked their place in the last eight with a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time win over DR Congo, a match that underlined their defensive discipline and patience.

Goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been a key figure, keeping clean sheets in all three matches he has started, with his legendary father French midfielder Zinedine Zidane watching on from the stands.

There are slight concerns for Algeria, with midfielder smaël Bennacer a doubt after picking up a knock in the previous round, though Jaouen Hadjam could return to the starting line-up if required.

History suggests this will be no straightforward task for Nigeria despite their form.

The head-to-head record favours Algeria in recent years, with the Super Eagles winless in their last four meetings against the Desert Foxes.

Algeria’s ability to frustrate Nigeria has been a recurring theme, contrasting sharply with Nigeria’s overall strong AFCON pedigree.

The Super Eagles have reached at least the semi-finals in 15 of their last 20 AFCON appearances, while Algeria have exited at the quarter-final stage in four of their last six knockout outings.

As Nigeria’s explosive attack meets Algeria’s structured defence under the Marrakech lights, this quarter-final shapes up as a defining moment for both sides. With history, form and pressure colliding at 7pm EAT, only one will move a step closer to continental glory.
