Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner

Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner delivered a solid and composed performance as Bristol City claimed a hard-fought 2-1 away victory over West Bromwich Albion in a Boxing Day Championship encounter at The Hawthorns.

The Kenyan defender, who played the full 90 minutes, was part of a resilient City backline that withstood sustained second-half pressure to secure maximum points on the road.

Bristol City wasted no time in stamping their authority on the contest, taking the lead just four minutes after kick-off.

An incisive move down the left saw Neto Borges find Anis Mehmeti at the edge of the penalty area.

The Albanian forward showed confidence and composure, swivelling before firing a low strike into the bottom left corner for his seventh goal of the season.

Despite a bright opening from the hosts, it was City who looked sharper and more decisive in the final third.

West Brom responded with intent, forcing City goalkeeper Max O’Leary into action. In the 11th minute, O’Leary produced a crucial one-on-one save to deny Isaac Price before reacting superbly to keep out Ousmane Diakité’s close-range header moments later.

Vyner and his fellow defenders stayed alert, organising well and limiting West Brom’s clear chances despite the pressure.

The Robins doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute following a well-worked team move. Borges delivered a dangerous cross that found Scott Twine, who showed great awareness to lay the ball into the path of Ross McCrorie.

The midfielder made no mistake, rifling a powerful effort into the net to give the visitors breathing space heading into the latter stages of the first half.

Before the break, West Brom searched for a way back, with George Campbell trying his luck from a loose ball, but his volley drifted wide and failed to trouble O’Leary. City went into halftime deservedly ahead, having shown efficiency in attack and discipline at the back.

The second half saw a noticeable shift in momentum as the Baggies increased the tempo and pinned City deeper into their own half.

The hosts threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, and in stoppage time Grant came agonisingly close, rattling the crossbar with a powerful effort.

However, City held firm, with Vyner playing a key role in seeing out the pressure and preserving the lead.
