Gor Mahia edge Tusker to extend SportPesa League lead after early own Goal at Kasarani

Gor Mahia tightened their grip at the top of the SportPesa League table after a narrow but hard-earned 1–0 victory over Tusker FC on Saturday afternoon at the Kasarani Stadium.

The thrilling match was ultimately decided by a costly early error, as a back-pass from defender Collins Odhiambo slipped past Tusker’s goalkeeper, Brian Opondo, and trickled into the net.

Gor Mahia showed intent from the first whistle, pressing high and forcing Tusker into rushed decisions at the back.

Their energy paid off inside eight minutes when Collins Odhiambo, attempting a routine back pass under pressure, misjudged his weight and direction.

The ball rolled past goalkeeper Brian Opondo who missed the ball while trying to stop it and nestled into the back of the net. Gor Mahia had the perfect start without registering a shot on target.

Despite the early setback, Coach Charles Okere, eager to bounce back from a 2–1 defeat to Police FC in their last outing, had adjusted his starting XI.

Brian Opondo reclaimed his position in goal, replacing Joseph Ochuka, while Vincent Owino slotted into midfield for the injured Dennis Iguma. The changes brought some stability, but the early lapse proved costly.

Coach Charles Akonnor, the reigning SportPesa League Coach of the Month for October, made only one adjustment from the side that stunned champions Police FC 2–0, introducing Bryson Wangai for Ebenezer Adukwaw.

Tusker slowly grew into the game, with Denis Oalo forcing Byrne Omondi into a sharp save on the half-hour mark.

Minutes later, a pinpoint corner from Ghanaian midfielder Enock Morrison found defender Sylvester Owino, whose strong header was parried away by Opondo as Gor Mahia pushed for a second goal.

Shariff Musa, the SportPesa League Player of the Month for October, orchestrated a brilliant counterattack at the 35th minute, but Tusker recovered quickly to avert further danger.

Tusker ended the half strongly with Vincent Owino testing Byrne Omondi from distance, but the keeper reacted well to preserve Gor’s lead heading into the break.

Chasing an equalizer, Tusker made three substitutions immediately after the restart, bringing on Yakeen Muteheli, Curtis Wekesa and top scorer Eric Kapaito to inject freshness and urgency into their attack.

Akonnor responded in the 61st minute by introducing Adukwaw and Alpha Onyango as Gor Mahia sought to control midfield and protect their slender advantage.

Tusker threw everything forward in the final half-hour, but Gor’s defensive pairing of Mike Kibwage and Sylvester Owino remained solid, cutting out crosses and blocking shooting lanes.

The Brewers later introduced Francis and Chris Erambo making a long-awaited appearance after injury,as they intensified their push.

Gor Mahia also refreshed their frontline, withdrawing Austine Odhiambo and Shariff Musa for Ben Stanley and George Amonno in the 79th minute.

Despite Tusker’s late pressure, Gor Mahia held firm for a crucial three points that not only kept them at the summit but also extended their historical head-to-head advantage over Tusker.

This win marks Gor Mahia’s 41st victory in 100 meetings between the two giants. Tusker have won 30 of those clashes, with 29 ending in draws.
