Mathare United will host record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in an anticipated SportPesa League encounter at the Kasarani Stadium on Thursday, October 30 from 4:00 PM.

Both sides head into the clash on the back of morale-boosting victories from last weekend. Mathare stunned Shabana FC 0-1 at the Gusii Stadium thanks to a decisive strike from former Shabana forward Dennis Okoth and the heroics of goalkeeper Kevin Ouru, who produced several crucial saves to keep a clean sheet.

Gor, on their part, were in dominant form as they swept aside Posta Rangers 3–0 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Ben Stanley Omondi opened the scoring with a header just seconds after coming off the bench. Austine Odhiambo doubled the advantage, capitalizing on a defensive lapse before Felix Oluoch sealed the win late in the game after being teed up by youngster Mark Shaban.

Heading into the fixture, Mathare sit eighth on the SportPesa League table with seven points from five matches two wins, one draw and two losses.

Gor Mahia, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last three matches, recovering impressively after losing their opening game 1-0 to Bidco United. The record champions are currently fourth on the log with nine points.

Statistically, Mathare United have scored and conceded four goals this season, while Gor Mahia boast six goals scored and have conceded just once, making them one of the league’s strongest defensive units.

Mathare United goalkeeper Kevin Ouru, who kept his third clean sheet of the season against Shabana, is optimistic ahead of the match.

“It will be an interesting and good game against Gor Mahia,” said Ouru.

“I think it will be a better encounter than the one against Shabana because both teams play differently and we will also be at home where the playing surface will be great.”

The custodian added that the win in Kisii has lifted their confidence going into the big game.

“Getting a win against Shabana away was a real morale booster for us. We will be going for maximum points against Gor Mahia, and as a goalkeeper, I want to maintain the good run I’ve been having,” he said.

“Mathare is a good side and we are going to approach them with all seriousness. I have watched them more than five times and we need to play above ourselves if we want to win,” Gor assistant coach Kobi Mensah said.
