Gor Mahia midfielder Enock Morrison has spoken strongly about who deserves to represent Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the players who fought to secure qualification should keep their places on the plane to North America.

The Ghanaian international, who has become a fan favorite at the Kenyan giants Gor Mahia, weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding players of Ghanaian descent who previously turned down national team call-ups but are now showing interest in joining the Black Stars following the team’s qualification.

“Those players are equally good, but the truth is, one man cannot suffer for another to enjoy. That is wrong, yes you’re a Ghanaian but you turned down the chance to represent the nation when you were needed most ,” Morrison said.

“The current players went through a lot to qualify the national team, and I think the same players deserve to go to the World Cup.”

His comments come amid reports that players such as former Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah and former Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi are considering switching allegiance to Ghana after earlier opting to represent other countries.

Morrison, who joined Gor Mahia from Asante Kotoko, believes the Black Stars already have a strong squad and a pool of exceptional local talent capable of representing the nation at the highest level.

He singled out Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare for praise after an impressive qualifying campaign in which he kept five clean sheets in six matches.

“As you know, when it comes to football quality, Ghana is up there with some of the best in the world. You can see it in the top leagues around the world we have many players in big European teams who are doing well and have always represented the country well” he noted.

“It’s always difficult for a coach to balance between calling local and foreign-based players, but I think he’s managing the situation well. Players like Benjamin have shown great commitment and quality, and I’m happy for him because I know what he’s been through and how he has pushed himself to the top. There are still many others in our league who can step up and make the country proud.”

Ghana last appeared at the FIFA World Cup in 2022, and the upcoming edition in 2026 will mark their fifth appearance at the global showpiece having made their debut in 2006. Morrison expressed immense pride in seeing his homeland make it back to football’s biggest stage.

“As a Ghanaian, I am very happy that we are going to the World Cup. It is the biggest tournament in the world, and every nation dreams to be there,” he said.

“I know everyone back home is happy, and all Ghanaians around the world are proud. I hope the team will make a big statement, just like we did in 2010.”

Morrison’s sentiments reflect the voice of many Ghanaians who believe loyalty and hard work should be rewarded.

As the Black Stars will be gearing up for the 2026 World Cup, it’s left to be seen if Coach Otto Odo will invite some of the players who once chose European nations over Ghana for the global showdown in America.
