Gor Mahia duo Mike Kibwage and Austine Odhiambo

Gor Mahia duo Austine Odhiambo and Mike Kibwage have teamed up with smartphone manufacturer OPPO Kenya as ambassadors for the brand’s newly launched OPPO A6 Pro, marking yet another milestone in the growing partnership between Kenyan football and major tech brands.

The two, who featured prominently for the Harambee Stars during their historic run to the quarterfinals at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, took part in a promotional campaign for the new OPPO device.

The campaign, which includes a series of photo and video shoots, highlights the phone’s advanced features and sleek design aimed at tech-savvy users and football fans alike.

In an interview with SportPesa Blog, Kibwage confirmed their involvement in the project, describing it as a short-term promotional engagement rather than a full brand endorsement.

“Yeah, we did something with OPPO to promote their new collection, the OPPO A6 Pro,” Kibwage said.

“It is an amazing device that comes with an 80W SuperVOOC Flash Charge and a powerful 7000mAh battery, among other top features. It’s not really a brand endorsement per se, just a small gig to help launch the new OPPO A6 Pro.”

The collaboration has been praised by many fans as a positive step in connecting football with technology and lifestyle branding. With footballers increasingly viewed as influencers both on and off the pitch, local brands are tapping into their popularity to reach younger audiences.

The pair joins a growing list of Kenyan footballers involved in major marketing deals.

Last year, Harambee Stars defender Erick “Marcelo” Ouma and Kenyan football legend Dennis Oliech worked with Tecno Mobile in a similar promotion, further signaling how global tech companies are using sports to strengthen their presence in the Kenyan market.

For OPPO, the move not only promotes their latest smartphone but also reinforces the brand’s connection with Kenyan youth culture through a sport that continues to inspire millions across the country.

The collaboration with Odhiambo and Kibwage is expected to drive excitement around the new product as it hits the Kenyan market.
