Kariobangi Sharks youngster Zablon Kutela named club’s player of the Month for September

Kariobangi Sharks rising star Zablon Kutela has been named the club’s Player of the Month for September, capping off an impressive run of form that has seen him establish himself as one of the most promising young defenders in the SportPesa League.

Kutela, who plays as a left-back, edged out strong competition from assistant captain Ian Karani and goalkeeper Sebastian Wekesa to claim the award.

Karani, a consistent performer at the heart of the Sharks’ defense, has featured in the 3 league games so far since stepping up to cover for injured skipper Kevinluke Otiala in the season opener.

His solid performances including a standout display that earned him Man of the Match honors in the goalless draw against Ulinzi Stars made him a top contender for the accolade.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Sebastian Wekesa, who also received a nomination, has been outstanding between the posts, keeping two clean sheets in three matches an impressive feat for a shot-stopper.

Speaking after receiving the award, Kutela expressed his joy and gratitude:

“It means a lot because many people would want to achieve such a thing, and it is a great motivation to me,” said the soft-spoken defender.

The Dagoretti High School alumnus attributed his success to hard work during pre-season preparations.

“During pre-season, I felt I was putting in a great effort, and I knew that would reflect in the league. I believed that kind of work would help me win an award like this,” he added.

Kutela, who is in his second season in the top flight, made his senior debut last campaign after earning promotion from the Kariobangi Sharks Youth Team, where he once served as assistant captain.

Reflecting on his progress, the young defender noted a visible difference in his approach and confidence this season.

“This season, I feel I will be more consistent, and I have also changed the way I play. Last season, I did not have a great pre-season compared to this one,” he explained.

Having adapted to life in the Premier League, Kutela believes he is now ready to take on more responsibility and feature regularly for the first team.

“It does not feel tough for me this season. Last year was difficult because it was my debut, but now I feel used to it. I want to play more games, get more minutes, and provide more assists,” he concluded.

Kutela’s rise through the Sharks ranks highlights the club’s strong emphasis on nurturing young talent and the youngster will be hoping to continue with his dream start to the new season in the SportPesa League.
