Reigning SportPesa League champions Gor Mahia will kick off their title defence on Tuesday, when they host Murang’a SEAL under the lights at Nyayo National Stadium from 7pm EAT.

Gor reclaimed the league title last season for a record-extending 22nd time, and with their opening league match at home, they will be looking to get off to a strong start as they begin another campaign under Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor.

K’Ogalo enter the new season as a different beast, both on and off the pitch, having made significant off-season signings.

They were also among the most active clubs during the break, featuring in numerous friendly matches both locally and across the borders.

Gor Mahia vs Murang’a SEAL match preview

While they were among the busiest sides fine-tuning their game ahead of the new campaign, Gor head into this fixture searching for stability following a bruising run on the continental stage.

In the 2026/27 CAF Champions League preliminary rounds, they were comprehensively outclassed by Egyptian giants Pyramids FC.

Gor Mahia lost the first leg 2-0 at home before suffering a crushing 5-1 defeat in Cairo, resulting in a painful 7-1 aggregate elimination that exposed significant defensive frailties.

These set backs came coupled with a very good preseason where their performances in the regional CECAFA Kagame Cup provided a roller coaster of results.

They opened the tournament with a spectacular 5-0 thrashing of Rwanda’s APR FC but stumbled in their second match, falling 1-0 to Uganda’s Vipers SC.

The Kenyan giants bounced back with a narrow 1-0 victory over Garde Republicaine to advance, before a 10-man Gor Mahia side dramatically edged Sudanese heavyweights Al Hilal Omdurman 8-7 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Ultimately, their quest for regional glory ended in heartbreak in the final, where they fell 2-1 in extra time to hosts Rayon Sports.

Their domestic pre-season friendlies offered little respite, as coach Akonnor struggled to find consistency amid ongoing league delays.

Away from the tournament, Gor Mahia endured a difficult run in local friendly matches, including a 3-1 defeat to Tusker FC in the season-opening FKF Super Cup.

They also suffered another narrow 3-2 loss to their rivals Tusker before slipping to a frustrating 2-1 defeat against Mathare United.

As they embark on their 59th top-flight campaign, Gor will be eager to hit the ground running as they pursue a record-extending 23rd league title and back-to-back championships.

For Murang’a SEAL, although their pre-season programme featured a handful of matches, they will be determined to put up a strong fight against the record champions.

Head coach Dennis Odhiambo believes his side is adequately prepared for Tuesday night’s encounter.

“We are excited to start the season tomorrow. The boys are well prepared, and we have been having a few friendlies and training camps. We have our target this season, and it all starts with our first match on Tuesday.

We approach the game differently. They are a good team, so we have to show up and be able to compete with them,” Odhiambo told the club’s media ahead of the match.

While Gor Mahia will be making their 59th top-flight appearance, this will be Murang’a SEAL’s fourth consecutive season in the top flight since earning promotion from the National Super League in 2023.

Having finished eighth last season, SEAL will be aiming to raise the bar and secure an even better finish this time around.

Both sides have bolstered their squads with new signings, who will be keen to inject fresh energy into their respective campaigns. However, injuries remain a concern, with some players still undergoing rehabilitation.

Gor Mahia have already provided an injury update on three key players, with Lawrence Juma having resumed training, while captain Sylvester Owino continues his recovery. Felix Oluoch is also nearing a return to action.

Since earning promotion, MSEAL have faced Gor Mahia seven times across all competitions, including six SportPesa League encounters, and are yet to register a victory.

K’Ogalo have claimed three wins, while the sides have shared the spoils on three occasions.

Last season, Gor Mahia won both league meetings. In the first leg at Kasarani Stadium, they staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 3-2 victory before dispatching SEAL 3-1 away in the return fixture.

With the opening league fixture set to be played under the floodlights, both sides will be eager to begin the campaign on a positive note.

Gor Mahia will be determined to avoid another opening-day setback after starting last season with a 1-0 defeat to Bidco United, while Murang’a SEAL will be looking to improve on their own disappointing start last term and set the tone for a more productive campaign.
