Kakamega Homeboyz registered their first win of the Sportpesa League 2025/26 season and the first under returning head coach Patrick Odhiambo with a narrow 0-1 away victory over Sofapaka FC at the Dandora Stadium in Friday’s early kickoff.
The decisive moment came early, as new acquisition Josphat Lopaga opened his account just three minutes into the game.
The forward, signed from Dinamo Brest, expertly latched onto a long pass from John Omondi before striking it past Sofapaka goalkeeper Victor Kamungo to give the visitors a crucial lead.

Homeboyz’s Patrick Odhiambo made four changes to the squad that drew goalless with Mara Sugar. Debutant Eugen Ochieng was handed his first start alongside Salim Murunga and former Gor Mahia midfielder Rodgers Ouma.
For Sofapaka, coach Charles Akwana gave a debut to Andrew Waswa as they looked to bounce back from a 2-0 home loss to Gor Mahia in their previous fixture.

The frantic opening minutes saw Sofapaka almost level the score in the 8th minute when Douglas Kibet was denied a glorious chance by a superb save from Homeboyz keeper Edwin Mukolwe.
Homeboyz were then forced into an early substitution in the 14th minute after captain Moses Mudavadi suffered an injury and was replaced by Ben Soul.
Both keepers had busy afternoons. Kamungo was called into action again in the 29th minute to save a ferocious shot from Hillary Otieno. Mukolwe was equally sharp, punching away an effort from Adrian Oloo early in the second half and later denying a shot from Mudavadi’s replacement, Ben Soul in the 50th Minute.

Sofapaka’s search for an equalizer was hampered by missed opportunities, most notably when Japheth Lihanda’s cross found Kibet, who headed wide in the 49th minute.
Coach Odhiambo made a double substitution in the 56th minute, bringing on Henry Omollo and Oliver Machaka.

Machaka and Omollo tested Kamungo with consecutive shots in the 67th minute, but the Sofapaka keeper held firm to keep the deficit at one goal.
The victory elevates Kakamega Homeboyz to four points from their opening two matches.
The win also marks a second consecutive clean sheet for goalkeeper Edwin Mukolwe, wgo who joined from Nairobi United in the off season transfer.
For Sofapaka FC, the defeat marks a disappointing trend of back-to-back home losses against Gor Mahia and Homeboyz. They head into the international break with just one point from their first three fixtures.
