The 35-year-old further praised the emerging talent in the squad for their commitment to the badge, explaining how his own know-how has profoundly benefited the team as he mentors them throughout the series.

“I’d say experience within the squad plays a huge role. We have exceptional young players, and my role involves guiding them, encouraging them to build confidence, and taking each game as it comes.

The results speak for themselves. We’ve reached five finals and we don’t take that for granted. Kudos to the boys; they have truly stepped up to fight for the KCB jersey.”

Onyala’s role at KCB Rugby

He elaborated on his leadership role since last season’s World Series, where he has been advising the team on the nuances and discipline required in the game.

“Let’s flash back to the previous Sevens. To play in the forward position, you need size, and when I started, I was a bit early into it. I had to learn the game, the laws, and how to play smart.

My goal has been to ensure my teammates understand the dos and don’ts of the game- it protects them on the field and gives us an edge over opponents. Their willingness to listen has really paid off.”

Onyala is eagerly anticipating the final round of the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit, the Dala 7s in Kisumu this weekend.

He described it as a special event for the team and hopes they perform well in the group stage to set themselves up for success.

“Heading into Dala7s, the pressure is lower now. We just need to perform well on Day One in the group stage and see how Day Two unfolds. This leg is special, it’s our hunting ground. We are looking forward to seeing our young players shine.”

Winning the overall title would mark a major milestone in the team’s rebuilding journey.

“Lifting the title would mean a lot. It’s part of our bigger plan, especially as we prepare for the Kenya Cup. It wil help us measure our progress.”

What KCB needs to lift the overall 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit title

To be crowned champions, KCB only needs to reach the semifinals.

The team currently sits at the top with 104 points.

Adding 15 points would bring them to 119, surpassing the maximum 117 that second-place Strathmore Leos can achieve should they win the title.

The Leos are currently on 95 points after finishing fourth at the Kababeri 7s.

Therefore, the journey is still within reach for the Bankers.

They need only 15 more points, or for Strathmore Leos to miss the final, to be crowned the new National Sevens Circuit champions overthrowing Kenya Harlequins.
