Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala has announced he will not compete at the Wanda Diamond League final 2025. Omanyala had already qualified for the 100m final after registering impressive performances during the season. He was expected to challenge for the coveted Diamond League trophy in the final scheduled to be held in Zurich, Switzerland from 27-28 August.

Why Omanyala pulled out of Diamond League final

Omanyala broke the sad news on Monday, August 25, revealing that an injury forced him to miss the clash as he stated that he hopes to recover before the Tokyo World Athletics Championships 2025.

“Due to recent hip, iliopsoas and gluteal pain experienced over the past few weeks, I regret to inform you that I will be unable to participate in the Diamond League finals 2025. I am optimistic about my recovery and anticipate being full fit for Tokyo,” he disclosed.

The Tokyo world championships will take place between September 13 and September 21, 2025 in Japan.

Omanyala, who set the current African 100m record of 9.77 seconds in 2021, is expected to represent Kenya in various disciplines in Tokyo including the 4x100m relay where he was instrumental in the team’s qualification.

Should he fail to recover in time before the eagerly anticipated championship, the Kenya relay team will not only miss one of their key members but also a leader.

Who was Omanyala expected to compete against at Diamond League final 2025?

Omanyala, who had amassed 20 points after featuring in several Wanda Diamond League meetings this season, was set to compete against a stellar field in Zurich’s final.

Some of these big names include the Paris 2024 Olympic Games champion Noah Lyles, Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and South Africa’s Akani Simbine.

Zharnel Hughes (Great Britain), Emmanuel Eseme (Cameroon), Trayvon Bromell (USA) and Brandon Hicklin (USA) have also qualified for the final.

Kenyan athletics fans will be praying that Omanyala will return to action before the Tokyo 2025 showdown and hopefully win an individual or team medal for the country.
