The African Nations Championships (CHAN) has helped unearth many talents in the continent since its inception in 2009.

The CHAN tournament, which is meant for players who play in domestic leagues in their respective countries, has also witnessed memorable victories.

As the eagerly awaited CHAN 2024 edition approaches, SportPesa Blog looks at the countries that have won the most titles.

DR Congo (2 CHAN titles)

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) made history in 2009 when they lifted the first ever CHAN title.

Led by the likes of Tresor Mputu, DR Congo hammered West African nation Ghana 2-0 in a thrilling final that was played at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The goals were scored by Dioko Kaluyituka and Bedi Mbenza.

A few years after making history, DR Congo went on to win their second CHAN title at the 2016 edition that was played in Rwanda.

The Leopards, as they are popularly known in world football, secured a 3-0 win over Mali and in the process became the first country to lift the CHAN trophy two times.

Mechak Elia scored a brace in that memorable game with Jonathan Bolingi also getting his name on the score sheet.

Morocco (2 CHAN titles)

Morocco put on a spirited display to win their maiden CHAN title at the 2018 edition that was staged on their home soil.

The Atlas Lions walloped West African football powerhouse Nigeria 4-0 in the final that took place at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.

Ayoub El Kaabi, who won the top scorer award, found the net nine times to help Morocco have the last laugh in the tournament.

The North African nation went on to defend their CHAN title in the delayed 2020 edition that was played in 2021 Cameroon.

They picked up a 2-0 win over Mali in a hotly contested final to become the first nation to win the CHAN trophy two times in a row.  Soufiane Bouftini and El Kaabi scored those goals.

Other countries that have won the CHAN title

Besides Morocco and DR Congo, there are three other nations that have tasted CHAN glory in the past. These countries are Tunisia (2011), Libya (2014), and Senegal (2022).

Kenyan football fans will be hoping to see Harambee Stars win the prestigious laurel in the CHAN 2024 edition that will be played in East Africa from Saturday, August 2 to Saturday, August 30.
