KCB Rugby clinched the Driftwood 7s 2025 title after defeating Strathmore Leos 15-14 in the opening leg of the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit, held at Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

Elvis Olukusi dazzled with a double try, while Floyd Wabwire added a third to seal the win, marking a stellar start to their season.

The squad now shifts focus to the second leg, the Prinsloo 7s that is scheduled for August 2-3 in Nakuru.

The Bankers struck early, with Elvis Olukusi touching down in the third minute on the left flank, giving his side a 5-0 lead after a missed conversion.

Just two minutes before halftime, KCB extended their advantage through Floyd Wabwire, who sliced through the defense from midfield with a blistering run.

Leos struggled to contain him, and Wabwire grounded the ball to make it 10-0, though the conversion again failed to find the target.

Returning to the same left wing, KCB continued their relentless pressure as Olukusi crossed the line once more, notching his second try and stretching Dennis Mwanja’s charges to a 15-0 lead.

Strathmore responded swiftly in the second half. Willis Ojal set the tempo, and Barnabas Owuor capitalized with a well-executed try, which was successfully converted, trimming the deficit to eight points.

KCB faced a setback when Floyd Wabwire was shown a yellow card and temporarily sent to the sin bin, reducing them to six players.

Leos took advantage of the numerical edge and applied sustained pressure within KCB’s 22-meter area.

Despite a late converted try from Strathmore, time ran out, allowing KCB to clinch a narrow 15-14 victory and hoist the season’s first trophy in dramatic fashion.

Kabras Sugar clinch third place at Driftwood 7s as Oilers finish fifth

Kabras Sugar bounced back to secure third place at the Driftwood 7s after overcoming Nakuru RFC 21-10 in the bronze final, capping off a strong finish despite being eliminated from Cup contention by archrivals KCB in the semifinals.

The Millers took a commanding 14-5 lead at halftime, courtesy of a brace by the electrifying Roy Maruti, who nullified an early try by Javan Otieno and successfully converted both of his own.

Kabras returned in the second half with renewed dominance, as Maruti opened the scoring once again, sealing his hat trick and adding the extras to stretch the lead to 21-5.

Kabras closed out the match in style, cementing their third-place standing in the opening leg of the SportPesa Sevens National Circuit. Nakuru managed a late consolation try but had to settle for fourth.

Meanwhile, former champions Kenya Harlequins endured a disappointing outing, finishing sixth after falling 7-14 to Menengai Oilers in the fifth-place playoff.

Alvin Khavoli and Fortune Arturo each crossed the whitewash for the Oilers, both tries expertly converted.

For Quins, Mathew Ouma scored their sole try, which was also converted, but it wasn’t enough to lift their position on the leaderboard.
