Kenyan tennis superstars Angella Okutoyi and Kael Shah are one match away from winning a gold medal at the ongoing FISU World University Games 2025 taking place in Germany.
This is after the Kenyan duo recorded a straight-set 7-66, 6-3 win over Portugal’s Garcia De Liborio and Pedro Araujo, who were the number 4 seeds, in the Mixed Doubles semifinals played on Thursday.
Their win booked them a spot against Japanese duo Natsuki Yoshimoto/Dylan Friend who pulled the biggest upset after knocking out top seeds Karolina Kubanova and Jan Jermar.
Friend and Yoshimoto recorded a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 victory to book their spot in the finals.
The Mixed Doubles final is set to take place on Friday from 11am.
Okutoyi, Shah out for redemption
The game will be an opportunity for Shah and Okutoyi to finish their tournament on a high after coming short in their respective Singles runs.
Shah succumbed to a First Round exit after tasting a 6-3, 6-2 loss against Italy’s Fabio De Michele.
On her part, Okutoyi, who was the 9th seed in the 64-player tournament, saw her journey end in the Round of 16 following her 6-3, 6-4 loss to India’s Adkar Vaishnavi.
