Uganda Lady Cranes name squad for 2026 Africa Women’s Sevens in Nairobi

Uganda’s Lady Cranes have named their 12-player squad for the 2026 Africa Women’s 7s Championship and World Rugby SVNS 3 Africa Qualifiers, scheduled for November 7 and 8 at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, Kenya.

Head coach Charles Onen has selected a squad that will be hoping to build on the team’s impressive showing at the recently concluded 2026 Safari 7s as Uganda targets continental honours and qualification for the HSBC SVNS 3 competition.

The Lady Cranes head into the tournament with confidence after an encouraging campaign at the Safari 7s, where they went unbeaten during the pool stages before eventually settling for the silver medal.

Captain Peace Lekuru will once again lead the Ugandan side, with Tina Akello named as vice-captain. The two will be expected to provide leadership and guide the team through what promises to be a competitive tournament.

Onen has opted for a more settled group for the continental assignment after using the Safari 7s to assess several players, including developmental prospects Justine Anguchia, Latifah Tiko and Sarah Kirabo.

The three have not made the final 12-player travelling squad as the technical bench settles on its preferred combination for the Nairobi competition.

Uganda will have to navigate a challenging group after being drawn in Pool C alongside Madagascar, Mauritius and Burkina Faso. The Lady Cranes will need consistent performances across their pool fixtures to keep their qualification ambitions on course.

The competition will bring together some of the continent’s leading women’s sevens sides, with a place in the World Rugby SVNS 3 pathway providing additional motivation for the participating teams.
