Giant slayers Nairobi United stunned favourites Gor Mahia 2-1 to win the coveted FKF Cup 2025 on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

Nairobi United started the match on a high, making life difficult for Gor Mahia FC and their efforts were rewarded in the seventh minute when Frank Ouya found the back of the net.

After the goal, the side which was recently promoted to the FKF Premier League, continued to press Gor Mahia, making it difficult for them to find an equalizer.

Despite the energetic display from them, Gor Mahia did not lose hope as their fans cheered them on.

K’Ogalo created several goal scoring opportunities, but they did not manage to break down the solid Nairobi United backline.

However, the situation changed in the 37 minute when Ben Stanley Omondi fired a low short that flew past Nairobi United goalkeeper and hit the bottom left corner of the net.

The goal was received with dances and jubilation from the Gor Mahia supporters, who had turned up in large numbers to support their beloved club.

Shortly after the goal, Harambee Stars midfielder Austin Odhiambo was brought down inside the Nairobi United penalty box but the referee did not see it fit to give Gor Mahia a spot kick.

Although players from both clubs tried their best to take the lead, the first half ended 1-1.

Gor Mahia players returned from the dressing room with a burning desire to increase their tally, launching several attacks on the Nairobi United defense.

As the clock ticked, Gor Mahia head coach Zedekiah Otieno decided to make a double substitution, introducing Charles Bbaale and Bryson Wangai in place of Sharrif Musa and the goal scorer Omondi.

The changes improved Gor Mahia’s attack, who created several goal scoring chances.

Similar to the Gor Mahia gaffer, Nairobi United head coach Nicholas Muyoti made an attacking change in the 59th minute.

He brought off the goal scorer Ouya and replaced him with the the powerful Michael Karamor.

Enock Mashaka gives Nairobi United the lead

The change did not have an immediate impact, forcing Muyoti to make other changes which paid off in the 72nd minute when Enock Mashaka unleashed a long range shot that nearly ripped off the net to put his side 2-1 ahead.

The goal angered some of the Gor Mahia supporters, who started to leave the Ulinzi Sports Complex one after the another.

Nevertheless, Gor Mahia nearly equalized in the 86th minute when Omondi was brought down in the penalty box again, giving the referee no other option than to award the Green Army a penalty.

Alpha Onyango stood up to take the spot kick but it was saved by Nairobi United goalkeeper Ernest Muhammed.

The missed opportunity ensured Nairobi United, which is associated with Nairobi County Governor Johnson Arthur Sakaja, lifted the FKF Cup for the first time ever, a result that consequently saw them book the ticket to represent the country in the 25/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
