Gor Mahia edged past Murang’a SEAL in a penalty shootout to secure their place in the 2024/25 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup final with a 2(5)-2(3) victory on Sunday, May 25, in a match that was staged at the Dandora Stadium.

The thrilling encounter ended in a 2-2 stalemate in regular time.

SEAL drew first blood through Michael Owen before Bryson Wangai restored parity for Gor. Alpha Onyango then put K’Ogalo ahead, only for Wilson Kamau to level matters again, sending the match to penalties.

In their quest for a finals berth and a potential ticket to next season’s CAF Confederation Cup Gor Mahia exhibited flawless precision from the spot.

Alpha Onyango, Enock Morrison, Gad Mathews, Philemon Oteno, and Austin Odhiambo all converted their penalties.

Murang’a SEAL, under the stewardship of Yusuf Chipo, also showed resilience.

Their skipper John Kiplangat, Michael Owen and Dennis Munyovi all found the back of the net, but Harun Mwale’s missed effort proved decisive, ending their valiant run.

In Dandora, SEAL made an electric start, taking the lead just six minutes in. Michael Owen capitalized on a fumbled clearance by Gor goalkeeper Gad Mathews, slotting home after a deflected cross from the right flank.

The first half saw SEAL dominate proceedings and nearly doubled their advantage on two occasions, but they squandered their chances.

Despite Gor Mahia intensifying their attacks, SEAL’s resolute defense held firm, and the teams went into the break with SEAL leading 1-0.

After the restart, Gor Mahia came out firing.

Benson Omalla had a goal ruled out for offside, and another opportunity was thwarted by SEAL goalkeeper Wilson Mwangi.

However, Gor finally found the breakthrough in the 57th minute when Bryson Wangai headed in a superb cross from the right.

Moments later, Zedekiah Otieno’s charges seized the lead as Alpha Onyango unleashed a fierce strike from outside the box to make it 2-1.

But the advantage was short-lived; SEAL equalized after a defensive lapse from Gor allowed substitute Wilson Kamau to nod in from a long throw-in, reigniting SEAL’s hopes.

Gor nearly reclaimed the lead when Enock Morrison launched a thunderous long-range effort, but Wilson Mwangi tipped it over brilliantly.

In the dying minutes, SEAL squandered a golden chance from a well-delivered corner, while Gor came close at the other end when Austin Odhiambo was fouled just outside the box.

His resulting free-kick rattled the woodwork in what was the last clear opportunity of the match.

With neither side able to find a winner in regulation time, the match was decided by penalties where Gor Mahia held their composure to advance 5-4.

Gor Mahia will now await the winner between Nairobi United and Mara Sugar, who are yet to contest their semifinal clash.
