Hellen Obiri reveals tactics behind New York Mini 10K race victory

Following her excellent performance at the 2025 New York Mini 10K, revealed the tactics that made her overcome the stiff competition from her opponents, especially Kelati.

She spoke about how the familiarity of the course and the deep understanding of the strengths of her main competitor helped her shine.

“For me it’s a beautiful race, you know, coming out with me here, they were so strong. And running Central Park. It’s my beautiful place to run Central Park. You know I have been running here so many times. So, for Mini 10K, I said, let me try and give out my best.

And when I stayed with Weini, I knew she was so strong. I said, ‘can I stay behind Weini at least for her to push me?’ But at 9.3K I said to myself, ‘Ooh, we’re almost,’ and I felt my legs had a lot of energy. So, honestly, I said, “Can I try to push,” explained Obiri.

Obiri also credited the hard work she did in training to improve her speed as another ingredient that brought the success.
