To lower the existing world record of 14:00.21 that was set by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay in 2023, Chebet will have to improve her new personal best by over two and half seconds, something that the reigning 5000m Olympic champion is confident of achieving.

Speaking after the electric performance in Rome, Chebet stated that she will attack the world record in the near future.

“Like I said yesterday, I am going to run my own race because I feel my body is in good shape. So, I have to try to see how far I can go when I push alone. You see, the pacemaker dropped after 2000m.

I said let me push and see what I am capable of because our target was 14: 15.00, but after running 14:03, a personal best and a meeting record, I am so impressed. So, I see the world record is capable and I am going to plan for it,” she explained.

When asked whether registering a sub 14 minute over the distance is something that she intends to attain, Chebet stated that she is in a good position of reaching that incredible milestone at the moment.

“Yes, very soon and I am going for it very soon, not very far. Soon I am going for it because after running 3000m in Rabat and coming here running 14:03 and yet I planned for 14:15.

I see I am capable, the body is moving. So, I just go back home and prepare for it,” replied the 25-year-old versatile runner.
