Kenyan runner Beatrice Chebet smashed the 5km world record at the 2024 Cursa dels Nassos event in Barcelona, Spain on Tuesday, December 31.
Chebet produced a breath-taking performance in the streets of the Spanish City to lower the old mark by her huge margin.
She ran a calculated race to cross the finishing line in an amazing time of 13:54 ahead of her East Africans compatriot.
Her time was more than 15 seconds faster than the previous world record of 14:13 that she set in the 2023 edition.

The second place position went to Ethiopiaâs highly-rated Ethiopian runner Medina Eisa with Ugandaâs Belinda Chemutai settling for the third place position.

In the menâs category, Kenyaâs Mathew Kipkoech clocked 13:28 to clinch the title ahead of Pierrik Jocteur Monrozier and Abdessamad Oukhelfen Ben Haddou, who hails from France and Spain respectively. Jocteur crossed the finishing line in 13:38 to narrowly edge out Oukhelfen.

An incredible year for Beatrice Chebet
Chebet’s world record, which will have to undergo the usual ratification process by the World Athletics before becoming official, was her second of the year.
The 24-year-old, who currently resides in Iten, had also set a new 10000m world record in May at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, United States.
She crossed the finishing line in an astonishing time of 28:54:14 and in the process became the first ever woman in history to dip under 29:00.00.
Besides breaking world records, Chebet also won the World Athletics Cross Country Championships title in an event that was staged in Belgrade, Serbia in March, bagged two gold medals at the Paris Olympic Games before securing the 5000m Diamond League trophy in Brussels.
