The journey to the highly anticipated World Athletics Championships is an interesting one, and for Kenya’s aspiring 10000m and 5000m athletes, the ultimate test awaits at the Prefontaine Classic 2025.

The Prefontaine Classic 2025, which is one of the high profile track and field events in the world, will be used to form a strong Kenyan 10000m men’s and 5000m women’s teams for the global showpiece.

According to a statement issued by Athletics Kenya, they settled for the Prefontaine Classic since it has a strong link with the country.

“Athletics Kenya (AK) is happy to announce that it will use this year’s Prefontaine Classic Diamond League to select the men’s 10000m and women’s 5000m team to represent the country at this year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The event will be held on July 5 at the Hayward Field in the University of Oregon, United States. Kenya has a rich history and connection with the prestigious event where several of our athletes have over the years shone and etched their names in record books with memorable performances,” read part of the press release.

AK optimistic of selecting a world-class team at Prefontaine Classic 2025

AK added that they are confident of picking a strong, talented team that is capable of winning numerous medals at the World Championships which is scheduled to be held between September 13 and September 21.

The federation that is headquartered in Nairobi also appreciated the Prefontaine Classic 2025 organizers for allowing Kenya to use the event to conduct the two trials.

“AK is grateful to the organizing committee of the Prefontaine Classic for providing us with this competitive environment and world-class facilities to conduct this exercise,” the communique stated.

Meanwhile, AK ended by revealing that the World Championships trials for the women’s 10000m and men’s 5000m will be staged in Nairobi later this year.

Beatrice Chebet among Kenyan heavyweights set to compete at Prefontaine Classic 2025

Some of the athletes who are expected to fight for the tickets to represent Kenya at the World Championships in Prefontaine Classic 2025 include Beatrice Chebet and Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli.

Chebet is enjoying an excellent form at the moment that has seen her bag the 3000m and 5000m titles at the Rabat and Xiamen Diamond League meetings respectively.

Therefore, Chebet is likely to shine again at the Prefontaine Classic 2025 where she will lock horns with other East African stars such as the Ethiopian duo of Gudaf Tsegay and Medina Eisa.
