Kenyan athlete Ferdinand Omanyala has overcome a lot of struggles to rise to the top of the sprinting world.
Omanyala has proved that Kenyans can also have a say in the sprinting world largely dominated by the likes of Jamaica and the United States in recent years.
Prior to the emergence of the likes of Omanyala, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and South Africa’s Akani Simbine, most people did not have enough respect for African sprinters.
However, these fantastic trio continue to show that Africans can also win short distance races at the global stage.

Ferdinand Omanyala: African 100m record
One of the best performances in Omanyala’s career came in 2021 when he produced a monstrous performance to set the current African 100m record of 9.77 seconds.
Omanyala, who has represented Kenya in various high-profile competitions including the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, achieved that remarkable feat at the Kip Keino Classic. Since then, no African sprinter has come close to lowering that impressive mark.

The time made Omanyala enter his name in record books as the ninth fastest 100m in the history of the sprinting world behind the likes of the Jamaican duo of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.
Ferdinand Omanyala: African 150m record
Omanyala set the African 150m record at the 2025 Adidas Atlanta City Games in the United States on Saturday, May 17.
The athlete, who has started an environment conservation initiative at the Ngong Forest, clocked a 14.70 seconds to win the title and in the process broke the previous African record of 14.89 seconds that was also set by him in 2023.
Ferdinand Omanyala: 60m Kenyan indoor record
Furthermore, Omanyala, who goes by the nickname “The Beast from the East” is the holder of Kenya’s 60m indoor record at the moment.

Omanyala set the record that stands at 6.51 seconds in February 2024 at the Paris Indoor Tour in France.
With dedication and discipline, Omanyala is expected to achieve more success at the individual and national level.
