Unlike the previous campaign where Gor Mahia were crowned champions for the 21st time with three games to spare and an 11-point cushion over second-placed Tusker—this season’s title race is fiercely competitive, with four teams still firmly in contention.

Only six points separate table-toppers Kenya Police (52 points) from fourth-placed Shabana (46 points).

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia and Tusker are neck-and-neck with 50 points each, just two and one point behind the leaders respectively.

So, who will claim the bragging rights this time? SportPesa Blog examines the remaining fixtures for the top four contenders and their chances of clinching the coveted trophy.

Gor Mahia

The reigning champions have not replicated their previous dominance following the departure of title-winning coach Jonathan McKinstry.

His Brazilian successor, Leonard Neiva, also struggled to inspire a consistent run, prompting the appointment of Sinisa Mihic earlier this year.

Under Mihic, Gor have shown signs of stability, suffering only one defeat, but are yet to find the cohesion needed to dominate the league.

For Gor Mahia to secure their third consecutive title, they may need to win at least five of their remaining six matches.

Their upcoming fixtures are far from straightforward. First, they face a crucial away game against Shabana on May 4 at Gusii Stadium—a must-win to widen the gap.

Next comes the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby against AFC Leopards. A home victory here could be pivotal, especially if rivals slip in their own fixtures.

City Stars, despite their struggles at the foot of the table, pose another challenge, as they fight to avoid relegation.

Gor will then take on Murang’a SEAL, another team desperate to escape the drop, before traveling to meet an in-form Ulinzi Stars.

Assuming Gor pick up 12 points from these five games, they would sit on 62 points. They would then require either Kenya Police or Tusker to falter in at least one fixture.

The final match of the season against Kenya Police—could ultimately determine the champion.

If both sides win their preceding matches, Gor must triumph in that head-to-head to leapfrog Police.

A draw may hand the advantage to the law enforcers.

To retain the title comfortably, Gor Mahia must aim for at least four wins and two draws, while also hoping that Police and Tusker drop points.

Kenya Police FC

Police began the FKFPL 2024/25 season sluggishly, leading to the dismissal of Salim Babu and his entire technical bench.

The arrival of Etienne Ndayiragije, however, has revitalized the team, transforming them into genuine title contenders.

Holding a slim two-point lead, Police’s fate could hinge on their encounters with fellow challengers Shabana and Gor Mahia.

Securing maximum points in these six-pointers would significantly boost their title chances.

Other fixtures include home clashes with Kariobangi Sharks and FC Talanta, as well as tricky away matches against Bandari Fc and Kakamega Homeboyz.

Winning four of these, including the decisive games against Gor and Shabana, would see Police finish on 64 points.

If Tusker drop one match and draw twice, they’d end with 63. A similar slip-up from Gor would cap them at 60.

Thus, five wins including the top-table clashes—could cement Kenya Police’s maidedn league title.

Tusker FC

The Brewers, led by Charles Okere, have shown inconsistency in recent weeks, missing opportunities to seize control of the standings.

While they don’t face any of their title rivals in the remaining fixtures, their run-in is far from easy.

Tusker are set to host AFC Leopards,Murang’a SEAL and Kariobangi Sharks, before traveling to face FC Talanta and Sofapaka.

They will then host Kakamega Homeboyz to close out the season.

With just a one-point deficit to overcome, four wins and a draw would lift them to 64 points.

However, if Gor Mahia win five of their six matches, Tusker would still fall short. Therefore, Okere’s men must aim for nothing less than five victories to realistically secure the title.

Shabana FC

Shabana’s presence in the title race has surprised many, though their spirited performances and youthful squad have justified their credentials.

Six points off the summit, their path to glory is the most demanding—but not impossible.

Key to their campaign are matches against both Kenya Police and Gor Mahia. Victories in those could level the playing field dramatically.

If Shabana win all six remaining games, they would finish on 64 points.

This scenario assumes Kenya Police and Tusker each drop two matches, allowing Shabana to potentially win the league on goal difference. However, anything less than a perfect run would likely see them fall short.
