- AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia FC played to a barren draw in an epic Mashemeji Derby.
- The first Mashemeji Derby of the season was attended by thousands of supporters.
- In other FKFPL matches that were played on Sunday, Shabana FC hammered Murang’a Seal 3-0 while Kenya Police FC defeated Posta Rangers 1-0.
AFC Leopards and their nemesis Gor Mahia FC shared spoils in the first Mashemeji Derby of the 2024-25 season on Sunday evening.
The two clubs started the match slowly with each side being keen not to make a mistake. However, as the game progressed they started to create chances, with the first one falling to AFC Leopards.

Ingwe, who have stayed for many years without lifting the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) title, failed to take the chance as Semo Samuel’s shot did not hit the target.
Two minutes later, Samuel had another opportunity to put AFC Leopards 1-0 ahead but he was denied by a brilliant save from Gor Mahia’s goalkeeper Gad Mathew.

The failure to convert their chances nearly cost them when a Gor Mahia player fired a heavy shot that was blocked near the goal line by Samuel.

K’Ogalo, who did not start their star midfielder Austin Odhiambo due to injury related reasons, could have broken the deadlock in the 23rd minute but Shariff Musa’s strike was punched away by Levis Opiyo.
The two sides created more chances but none of them managed to find the breakthrough, thus forcing the 96th Mashemeji Derby to end 0-0 at half time.
At the start of the second half, AFC Leopards head coach made one change. He brought on Victor Otieno in place of Ovella Ochieng.
Nonetheless, the change did not have considerable change as his forwards failed to demolish the solid Gor Mahia backline.
Ambani made three more substitutions as he tried to register his first Mashemeji Derby win as Ingwe’s coach.
He introduced Victor Omune, Kevin Kimani and Ronald Sichenje in place of Maxwell Otieno, Beja Hassan and Kelly Madada but luck was not on his side.
Similar to Ambani, Gor Mahia tactician Sinisa Mihic also made a number of substitutions which did not change the outcome of the tie, forcing the two sides to share spoils.
The draw increased Gor Mahia’s tally to 43 points, five less than FKFPL leaders Kenya Police FC.
Meanwhile, AFC Leopards retained their sixth position in the standings with 37 points, edging out Shabana FC only on goal difference.
Nevertheless, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards have played one game less than their fellow title contenders, implying they still got a chance of winning the FKFPL trophy at the end of the season.
Shabana FC humiliate Murang’a Seal in SportPesa Derby
In other FKFPL matches, Shabana FC walloped their fellow SportPesa sponsored side Murang’a Seal 3-0 in an epic tie that was staged at the scary Gusii Stadium in Kisii County while Kenya Police FC picked up a narrow 1-0 win over Posta Rangers in Machakos.

Shabana’s goals came courtesy of Austine Odongo, who scored a second half brace, and Ezekiah Omuri. Omuri was recently named in the Rising Stars provisional squad that will take part in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) U20 tournament.
On the other hand, Kenya Police scored their goal via mercurial forward Mohammed Bajaber.
