Renowned for their electric pace and endurance, a number of Kenyan athletes are set to compete for the top prize at the 2025 Miami Grand Slam Track series between Friday, May 2 and Sunday, May 4.

Some of these Kenyan runners will feature as racers in their categories while others will compete as challengers.

In total, five Kenyan runners including Agnes Jebet Ngetich, who smashed the 10km road women’s only world record in Germany over the weekend.

Women’s short distance category (800m and 1500m races)

The reigning 800m world champion Mary Moraa is the only Kenyan who will take part in the women’s short distance category at the Miami Grand Slam Track.

Moraa, who was forced to pull out of the first Grand Slam Track series that was staged in Kingston, Jamaica a few weeks ago due to health problems, will be aiming to make a comeback in Miami.

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games medalist will come up against seven other runners in the 800m and 1500m races.

These other runners include the Ethiopian duo of Freweyni Hailu and Diribe Welteji, Jessica Hull, Emily Mackay, Nikki Hiltz, Shafiqua Maloney, and Lucia Stafford.

Women’s long distance category (3000m and 5000m races)

Meanwhile, Janeth Chepngetich and Ngetich, who finished second overall the Kingston Grand Slam Track, is the only Kenyan athlete confirmed for the women’s long distance category in the Miami Grand Slam Track series.

Ngetich’s record breaking performance in Germany makes her one of the favorites to shine in the Miami Grand Slam Track.

In Miami, the Kenyan pair will lock horns with their East African opponents Hirut Meshesha, Medina Eisa, Tsige Gebreselama and Aynadis Mebratu, who hail from Ethiopia. Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka  and Elise Granny will also be in contention.

Men’s short distance category (800m and 1500m races)

Similar to the women’s short distance category, the men’s version of the event will also have only one Kenyan athlete.

Former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot will try to emulate the performances that his compatriot Emmanuel Wanyonyi posted at the Kingston Grand Slam Track series.

Wanyonyi, who came close to breaking the mile world record last Saturday in Germany, won the Kingston Grand Slam Track series overall title. He triumphed in the 1500m race before finishing second in the 800m category.

His absence in the Miami Grand Slam Track series leaves the field wide open for any of the competitors particularly his replacement Cheruiyot and Canadian ace Marco Arop to shine.

Besides Cheruiyot and Arop, the other contestants in this category at the Miami Grand Slam Track are Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr, Yared Nuguse, Peter Bol, Tshepo Tshite, and Kethobogile Haingura.

Finally, Ronald Kwemoi is the only Kenyan athlete who is set to light up the men’s long distance category at the 2025 Miami Grand Slam Track series.

Kwemoi, who won a silver medal for Kenya in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, will compete against the likes of Grant Fisher, George Mills, Andrew Coscoran, Hagos Gebrhiwet, Cooper Teare, Sam Atkin and Dawit Seare.
