  • Kipyegon is expected to take part in a number of events in the upcoming weeks including the World Athletics Championships.

Track queen Faith Kipyegon ran the fastest 1000m race in the history of the Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday evening, April 26.

With an electric performance, Kipyegon showed her opponents dust to win the title in a Xiamen Diamond League meeting record time of 2:29.21.

Kipyegon allowed her opponents including Ethiopia’s Habitam Alemu to dictate the race in the earlier stages before powering away with less than 400m remaining to the finishing line.

Her time was 0.23 seconds slower the current 1000m world record of 2:28.98 that was set by Russian runner Svetlana Masterkova in 1996.

In addition, Kipyegon, who has narrowly missed Masterkova’s world record several times, clocked a time that was slower than her lifetime best over the distance that stands at 2:29.15.

After her heroic performance, Kipyegon is expected to return to Kenya and continue with training ahead of upcoming events.

The athlete, who trains with superstars such as Eliud Kipchoge and Geoffrey Kamworor in Kaptagat, will focus her energy on the highly anticipated Breaking4 project and the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

At the Breaking4 project, which is set to go down on June 26 in France, Kipyegon will be aiming to become the first woman since the inception of athletics to run a mile in less than four minutes.

On the other hand, all eyes are expected to be on her in the World Athletics Championships that is set to take place in Tokyo from September 13 to September 21 to see whether she can defend her title.
