Three-time Olympic Games champion Faith Kipyegon has been nominated for the 2025 Laureus world sportswoman of the year award.

Kipyegon, who had a fantastic 2024 season, will fight for the award against five other outstanding women.

These stars include Dutch sensation Sifan Hassan, American gymnast Simone Biles and FC Barcelona magician Aitana Bonmati.

Biles’ compatriot Sydney McLaughlin Levrone and Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka are also in contention.

According to the organizers, the winners of the award in each category will be announced in a few weeks’ time.

“The winners of the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards, the most prestigious honours in sport, are to be announced in Madrid, on April 21.

25 years after the inaugural Laureus World Sports Award were held in Monaco in 2000, this special anniversary edition of the greatest show in sports will celebrate the growth of Laureus as a unique sporting movement – encompassing the world famous Awards and the work of Laureus Sport for good in over 40 countries,” the statement read in part.

Kipyegon is one of the front runners for the laurel based on the achievements that she registered last season.

The mother of one successfully defended her 1500m Olympic Games title at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, becoming the only woman to win three consecutive gold medals in the discipline in history.

Besides defending her 1500m title, the Kaptagat based runner also bagged a silver medal in the 5000m race. She clocked 14:29.60 to finish behind her fellow countrywoman Beatrice Chebet.

Furthermore, Kipyegon also managed to secure the 1500m Wanda Diamond League trophy in the final that was staged in Brussels, Belgium in September.

Elsewhere, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo will square it out for the 2025 Laureus world breakthrough of the year award against tough opponents such as FC Barcelona wonder kid Lamine Yamal and Canadian swimmer Summer Ann McIntosh.

French basketball player Victor Wembanyama, who plays for NBA side San Antonio Spurs, the reigning Bundesliga Champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred have also been nominated in that category.
