Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala failed to triumph at the 2025 Botswana Golden Grand Prix on Sunday evening.

Omanyala, who entered the race as one of the favorites, was beaten by his African rival Akani Simbine in the event that took place at the National Stadium in Gaborone.

Simbine ran a brilliant race to cross the finishing line in a world lead time of 9.90 seconds with Omanyala following him in 10.00 seconds.

The third place position went to Simbine’s fellow countryman Retshidisitswe Mlenga, who crossed the finishing line in 10.15 seconds.

Ferdinand Omanyala’s compatriot Mark Otieno finishes fourth

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Mark Otieno, who is slowly getting back to his best, settled for the fourth position in a time of 10.22 seconds.

This was the third high profile race that Omanyala has taken part in this year. The Nairobi based sprinter opened his 2025 campaign at the ASA Grand Prix in South Africa.

At the first leg of the ASA Grand Prix, Omanyala register a third position in 10.22 seconds before going on to win ASA Grand Prix 2 in 10.08 seconds.

Ferdinand Omanyala heads to Xiamen Diamond League

After today’s race, the 29-year-old will shift his attention to the upcoming Xiamen Diamond League in China that is expected to take place on Saturday, April 26.

Besides Omanyala, several other Kenyan athletes will feature in Xiamen Diamond League.

Faith Kipyegon, who has broken the 1500m world record a number of times in the past two years, is one such names.

Kipyegon will take part in the 1000m discipline where she will try her best to smash the existing world record of 2:28.98 that was set in 1996 by Svetlana Masterkova of Russia.
