Gor Mahia FC moved a step closer to summiting the 24/25 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) table after securing a crucial 2-0 win over Bandari FC on Saturday evening.

Gor Mahia, who entered the game played at the Dandora Stadium with a poor record against the Coastal-based side in recent matches (2L), scored their goals in the first and second half.

Alpha Onyango broke the deadlock in the 14th minute of the epic encounter to send the K’Ogalo faithful into a frenzy.

After the goal, Gor Mahia continued to put pressure on the Bandari backline as they tried to increase their lead.

However, the visitors, who also had a couple of goal scoring chances, made it difficult for them.

Gor Mahia’s second best chance of the first half came in the 24th minute when mercurial midfielder Austine Odhiambo fired a powerful shot from a free kick but it was saved by Bandari shot stopper Bryne Odhiambo.

As the game went on, Bandari started enjoying more possession and applied constant pressure on their opponents especially in the final stages of the first half.

Nonetheless Gor Mahia stood strong to ensure they went to the break with a slim 1-0 lead.

In a bid to regain control of the match, Gor Mahia boss Sinisa Mihic made two substitutions at the start of the first half.

He introduced Musa Shariff and Chris Ochieng in place of Samuel Kapen and Mark Shaban.

3 crucial points for Gor Mahia

Mihic’s decision helped Gor Mahia to create a couple of goal scoring chances but they failed to convert them.

The Croatian head coach pulled out Odhiambo from the game and introduced Enock Morrison in the 57th minute.

Morrison nearly put the defending champions two goals up in the 65th minute when he produced a brilliant run before unleashing a shot, but it was unluckily saved by Odhiambo.

Mihic then made two more substitutions which made it possible for Gor Mahia to score their second goal which came courtesy of Ochieng.

The latter escaped from one of the Bandari FC defenders and slotted the ball into the net to ensure Gor Mahia collected the maximum points.

The three points increased the club’s tally to 42 points, three less than league leaders Kenya Police FC who hammered Murang’a Seal 3-1 earlier in the day.

On the other hand, Bandari FC, who have collected 36 points so far this season, dropped to position nine.
