Gor Mahia players in Machakos.

After suffering their first defeat to Tusker FC in two years on Sunday evening, Kenya’s reigning champions Gor Mahia will return to action on Wednesday, January 22 when they host high-flying Sofapaka at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County.

The rescheduled match is set to kick off at 4:00 PM EAT.

On Sunday, Ryan Ogam’s late strike denied the Zedekiah Otieno-led side even a point, halting their efforts to boost their league standing.

Tusker broke the deadlock first, but sensational attacking midfielder Austin Odhiambo equalized from a free kick.

Despite the match looking set to end in a draw, Ogam delivered a late suckerpunch to steal all three points that gave Tusker a three-point gap at the summit.

Beyond recovering from the setback, Gor Mahia will also aim to improve their standing on the log where they currently sit in sixth place with 24 points.

A win today would keep them in that same position but reduce the points gap with league leaders Tusker FC who are at the top with 33 points.

In their home matches, Gor Mahia has suffered just one defeat in the eight games they have hosted this season, securing four wins and three draws.

On the other hand, Sofapaka is in strong form, having not lost any of their last six matches.

They are in fifth place, tied with Gor Mahia on 24 points, and will be aiming to secure a spot in the top four.

Their most recent victory came at the Dandora Stadium where they triumphed 2-1 over Posta Rangers on Sunday.

A win today would propel Batoto Ba Mungu into fourth place as they continue to push for the top-flight title.

While Gor Mahia has lost only one home match, Sofapaka, under Ezekiel Akwana, has also lost one away match in their last eight outings, securing three wins and four draws.

Therefore, this match promises to be an entertaining encounter as both teams vie for supremacy on the table.
