Kenya Morans avenge Shogun defeat to set up all-Kenyan Safari 7s final against Shujaa

SAFARI 7S 2026 FINALS

The second string of the national 7s side, Kenya Morans, avenged last year’s Safari 7s semifinal defeat after thrashing Shogun Rugby 31–10 in the 2026 edition, played on Sunday afternoon at Nyayo Stadium, setting up an all-Kenyan final against the first side, Shujaa.

Morans lost last year’s semifinal to the same opponents 14–12 and were determined to settle the score.

Having enjoyed an impressive run throughout the weekend, they did not disappoint, delivering a disciplined performance.

Morans, who secured their semifinal spot after overpowering another formidable side, South Africa’s SportPesa Fast Forward 7s, 38–15, made their intentions clear early on.

They drew first blood when Matheus Osimbo spotted a gap off the ruck, evaded the defence and raced between the posts, with Mike Lukusi adding the extras.

The Louis Kisia-coached men capitalised on their opportunities, and shortly after the restart, Morans captain Clinton Amukwachi exploited space on the left, sprinting forward before dotting down for a try, although Lukusi missed the conversion.

Shogun reduced the deficit before halftime when two-time Olympian Harry McNulty launched a long pass towards the left wing, where Elkans Wullense was alert enough to collect the ball and cross the line. He, however, missed the conversion.

While Shogun might have fancied their chances of a comeback, Morans had other ideas, producing another brilliant try as the hooter sounded.

Mike Lukusi found Amukwachi, who shrugged off the defence to score a converted try, sending Morans into the break with a commanding 19–5 lead.

After the restart, Morans maintained their dominance and extended their advantage. Osimbo grabbed his second try of the match, although Lukusi missed the conversion.

Amukwachi then delivered a slick offload to Dennis Ndayala, who crossed the line for another seven points, stretching Morans’ lead to 31–5.

The former champions managed to score two more tries, but their late efforts were insufficient to inspire a comeback, with Morans sealing their ticket to the final.

Morans will now seek to reclaim the title when they face reigning champions Shujaa, who dispatched French Renegades 36–0 in the other semifinal. Meanwhile, Shogun will face the losing side in the third-place playoff.
