Christie 7s shocker: Oilers, Leos stun KCB and Kabras Sugar to storm into Cup finals

The SportPesa National 7s Circuit produced another dramatic twist at the Christie 7s on Sunday as Strathmore Leos and Menengai Oilers pulled off major upsets to book their places in the Main Cup final at the RFUEA Grounds.

The two sides upset the established order by knocking out circuit heavyweights KCB and Kabras Sugar respectively, setting up an intriguing final in the last leg of the 2026 National 7s campaign.

For Strathmore Leos, reaching the final came with an added sense of satisfaction after they avenged their earlier defeat to KCB at the same venue.

The university outfit had been beaten by KCB at RFUEA Grounds during the Kabeberi 7s a few weeks ago, but they turned the tables when it mattered most, producing a disciplined performance to secure a 19-12 victory.

Leos started the semifinal with intent and quickly put KCB under pressure. Arnold Mwita broke the deadlock with the opening try, giving Strathmore a 5-0 advantage as they settled into the contest.

The varsity side continued to dominate possession and territory, forcing KCB to defend deep. Their second try came after a well-worked attacking move involving Gabriel Ayimba and Thomas Opiyo. Ayimba found Opiyo, who released Collins Maina with a timely offload.

Maina then showed his pace on the left flank, beating the KCB cover and crossing the whitewash for Leos’ second try. The successful conversion stretched their advantage to 12-0.

KCB went into the interval trailing and needing a strong response after struggling to impose themselves in the opening seven minutes.

The circuit leaders returned from the break with renewed purpose and finally found a way through the Strathmore defence. Austin Sikutwa touched down for KCB’s first try before adding the conversion to reduce the deficit to 12-7.

KCB’s momentum continued as they pushed for an equaliser, and their pressure eventually paid off when Festus Shiasi crossed on the far right flank. With the scores level, the semifinal appeared destined for a tense finish.

However, Leos held their nerve when the decisive moment arrived.

A late penalty awarded to Strathmore gave them an opportunity to attack KCB’s line. Austin Sikutwa opted to tap the ball into touch, handing Leos a penalty try and restoring their advantage.

The final whistle confirmed a 19-12 victory for Strathmore, sending the varsity side into the Christie 7s final and ending KCB’s hopes of adding another leg title to their impressive circuit campaign.

In the other semifinal, Menengai Oilers also produced a statement performance, defeating their Rai Derby rivals Kabras Sugar 20-10 to secure their place in the final.

Oilers’ victory ensured that neither KCB nor Kabras, the two leading sides in the overall circuit standings, would contest the Christie 7s showpiece.

The result sets up a final between two sides that have shown the ability to upset the established order, with Strathmore Leos carrying the momentum of their victory over KCB while Menengai Oilers will be confident after eliminating Kabras.

In the women’s Main Cup, Kenya Harlequin Queens are set to face Mwamba Ladies in the final, with both sides looking to finish the Christie 7s campaign on a high.

With the overall SportPesa National 7s Circuit title on the line, the Christie 7s has lived up to its billing as the decisive final chapter of the 2026 campaign.
