Mean Machine punched their first ticket of the season in the SportPesa 7s Division One after beating Northern Suburbs 22-10 in the Division Two Cup final at Embu Stadium on Sunday.
It was a fitting way for Mean Machine to cap a tournament in which they showed both attacking flair and defensive discipline, going through the competition unbeaten before lifting the Division Two trophy and securing their return to Division One.
The University of Nairobi side came into the final with promotion already within sight, but they showed no signs of nerves when the big moment arrived. From the opening whistle, Mean Machine looked sharp in possession, moved the ball with purpose and kept Northern Suburbs pinned deep inside their own half.

Machine struck first with an unconverted try in the corner to take a 5-0 lead, immediately putting Suburbs on the back foot.
The early breakthrough gave Mean Machine confidence, and they soon doubled their advantage when Duncan Shamala produced a superb individual burst. Shamala sliced through the Northern Suburbs defensive line, accelerating into space and finishing a brilliant break to put Machine 10-0 up.
Northern Suburbs struggled to contain the pace and direct running of their opponents, while Mean Machine continued to attack the spaces around the breakdown and force defensive gaps.
Their pressure eventually paid off again as The Eschuma got another try, which was converted to give Machine a commanding 17-0 lead heading into the interval.

With a three-score advantage, Mean Machine could have been forgiven for taking their foot off the accelerator after the restart. Instead, they continued to play with intent.
Northern Suburbs came out strongly in the second half and managed to get on the scoreboard, reducing the deficit and briefly threatening to turn the contest into a nervy finish.
Mean Machine, however, responded exactly as champions should.
Dennis Migoro gathered a sharp ball off the ruck before bursting into open space and racing over the try line. The successful score stretched Machine’s advantage to 22-5 and effectively put the result beyond Northern Suburbs’ reach.
Suburbs managed to score a late consolation try, but by then Mean Machine had established too much daylight between the two sides. They held their shape, managed the closing stages well and eventually sounded the final whistle as 22-10 winners.
The victory marks a significant moment for Mean Machine, who have now earned their place back among the country’s leading Sevens sides after missing out on Division One since their previous spell in the top flight.
Their performance at Embu suggests they will return to the elite division with plenty of confidence. More importantly, the manner in which they negotiated the tournament — combining attacking rugby with defensive resilience when required — provides a strong foundation for their next challenge.
For Northern Suburbs, the final ended in disappointment, but reaching the Division Two Cup final represents a strong showing at Embu.
Mean Machine, meanwhile, can celebrate a trophy, an unbeaten tournament and most importantly, promotion.
The Embu 7s has therefore delivered a major milestone for the club, with Mean Machine now set to make their return to Division One determined to prove they belong among the country’s best.
