Kabras to face Oilers as KCB square off against Daystar Falcons in Embu 7s Main Cup Semis

The wheat has been separated from the chaff at the SportPesa National 7s Circuit – Embu 7s, with the semi-final line-up now confirmed and a mouth-watering Rai Derby set to headline the last four.

Kabras RFC will face Menengai Oilers in one of the semi-finals, setting up a highly anticipated clash between two sides with plenty of experience at the top level of Kenyan rugby. In the other semi-final, KCB Rugby will square off against Daystar Falcons as the four teams battle for a place in the Main Cup final.

Kabras had to dig deep to secure their place in the semi-finals after overcoming a stubborn Mwamba Rugby side 22-12 in a fiercely contested quarter-final.

Mwamba made the brighter start, with Eugene Ojiambo drawing first blood after crossing the try line to put his side ahead. Ndayala made no mistake with the conversion, giving Mwamba a 7-0 lead.

Kabras responded before the interval through experienced forward Griffin Chao, who used his strength and pace to power over for their opening try. The conversion was unsuccessful, leaving Mwamba with a narrow 7-5 advantage at the break.

Kabras came out firing after the restart and quickly turned the pressure into points. Chao released Rayvon Ambale, who finished the move by touching down to put Kabras ahead for the first time at 10-7. The conversion attempt went wide.

Mwamba refused to surrender their advantage easily and regained the lead through Ndayala. The winger produced a clever cut-back, beating Lukusi with a deceptive dummy wing pass that caught the Kabras defence off guard. He touched down to make it 12-10 in favour of Mwamba, although the conversion was unsuccessful.

The lead changed hands again as Kabras responded with a well-worked interchange between Eugene Ojiambo and Kevin Wekesa. Ojiambo eventually found Wekesa, who finished the move with a try to restore Kabras’ lead at 15-12. The conversion was unsuccessful.

With the match entering its decisive stages, Kabras delivered the sucker punch.

After winning a scrum, the Western-based side capitalised on the possession, with experienced campaigner Brian Tanga powering over for another try. Rayvon Ambale then added the extras, extending Kabras’ advantage to 22-12.

Mwamba pushed for a response in the closing minutes, but Kabras held their defensive shape and managed the final exchanges to secure a 22-12 victory and book their place in the semi-finals.

The result sets up a Rai Derby against Menengai Oilers, who had earlier secured their spot in the last four with a 19-5 victory over KU Blak Blad.

Oilers were forced to come from behind after Blak Blad took an early lead, but the experienced side produced a strong second-half performance to complete the comeback and seal their place in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Daystar Falcons edged Nondescripts 17-15 in a tightly fought quarter-final to earn a semi-final date with KCB Rugby.

KCB had earlier put in a disciplined defensive performance to eliminate Kenya Harlequin 12-0, keeping a clean sheet and securing their place in the last four.

With Kabras, Menengai Oilers, KCB Rugby and Daystar Falcons now left standing, the battle for the Embu 7s Main Cup enters its decisive stage.

The Rai Derby between Kabras and Oilers promises to be one of the major highlights of the semi-finals, while KCB and Daystar will be aiming to book the other place in the Main Cup final.
