Kabras, Oilers, Falcons and KCB through to the Embu 7s Main Cup Semis

Menengai Oilers, Daystar Falcons, KCB Rugby. Kabras RFC booked their places in the Main Cup semi-finals of the SportPesa National 7s Circuit Embu 7s after coming through their respective quarter-final clashes on day two of the tournament.

The four sides got their second-day campaigns off to a winning start, with Menengai Oilers producing a strong second-half comeback to defeat KU Blak Blad 19-5, KCB Rugby saw off Kenya Harlequin 12-0 and Daystar Falcons edged Nondescripts 10-5, while Kabras staged a comeback to beat Mwamba RFC 22-12.

Menengai Oilers were forced to dig deep against a determined KU Blak Blad side, who started the contest brightly and took an early lead.

Archedius Khwesa produced an outstanding burst of pace to break through the Oilers’ defence and touch down for KU Blak Blad’s opening try. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but the varsity side had taken a 5-0 lead.

Khwesa’s try was a moment of individual brilliance, with the Blak Blad player showing impressive acceleration to exploit space and finish the move.

The score remained unchanged heading into the break, with KU Blak Blad holding a narrow 5-0 advantage. The first-half statistics showed a closely contested battle, with both teams winning two scrums. Blak Blad also won one lineout, while Oilers registered two turnovers won.

Oilers returned from the break with renewed purpose and quickly turned the game around.

Alvin Kavolia finally got the Menengai side on the scoreboard with a well-taken try, before Glacious Owino added the conversion to put Oilers in front for the first time at 7-5.

The turnaround gave Oilers confidence, and they continued to put pressure on the Blak Blad defence.

Kavolia was involved again, finishing off another attacking move out wide to score his second try of the match. Owino could not convert this time, but Oilers had extended their lead to 12-5.

Menengai Oilers were now firmly in control, with their attack beginning to stretch the Blak Blad defence.

Victor then produced an important offload to Owino, who made no mistake as he crossed the try line for Oilers’ third try of the contest. Owino added the conversion himself to take the score to 19-5.

KU Blak Blad tried to respond and appeared to have created an opportunity for another try when Mulongo was released following an offload from Obat Okuke. However, the move was ruled out for a forward pass, denying the varsity side a chance to reduce the deficit.

Oilers held firm during the closing stages, managing the game well to secure a 19-5 victory and seal their place in the Main Cup semi-finals.

Elsewhere, KCB Rugby continued their impressive campaign with a 12-0 victory over Kenya Harlequin. The bankers kept a clean sheet and controlled the contest to progress to the last four.

Daystar Falcons also booked their place in the semi-finals after edging Nondescripts 10-5 in another closely fought quarter-final.

Meanwhile, Kabras Sugar had to come from behind to beat a resilient Mwamba RFC and book their place in the semi-finals as they target their third circuit title.

The four sides will be hoping to carry their momentum into the semi-finals as they chase valuable points and the coveted Embu 7s crown in the latest leg of the SportPesa National 7s Circuit.
