KCB rugby had to score a winning try in sudden death to beat a resilient Menengai Oilers 10-5 and set up a thrilling 2026 Driftwood 7s final against perennial rivals Kabras Sugar on Sunday afternoon at Mombasa Sports Club.
Despite KCB dominating the game, it was Oilers who managed to take the lead through Beldad Ogeta, who overpowered the KCB defence on the left to ground the ball, which Glacious Owino was unable to convert.
Just seconds before the final hooter Oilers thought they were holding onto that lead, Festus Shaissi managed to give his side the leveller with five points, as Emmanuel Opondo missed the conversion to take the game into sudden death.
Oilers might rue their defence for failing to hold firm, as Olympian Vincent Onyala was the man who ensured KCB made it through to the final.

For Kabras, they had an easy outing with a 19-0 win over Daystar Falcons as they returned to the SportPesa 7s circuit Main Cup final, having missed out in the third leg last weekend at the Kabeberi 7s in Nairobi.
Falcons had a better opening to the game as they dominated proceedings for most of it. However, in the final minute of the first half, Brian Mutua gave Kabras a 7-0 lead following a good play by Mike Lukusi, who offloaded the ball to him on the left wing.
Just before halftime, Kabras extended their advantage when Kevin Wekesa took the ball from the ruck and spotted Rayvon Ambale on the right flank. Abale surged through with speed to dot it down as Kabras went into the break leading 12-0.
In the second half, Kabras continued to seal their victory, with Mathias Osimbo getting on the scoreboard next as Ambale converted well to put them 19-0 up, which proved to be the ultimate score as Kabras marched into the Cup final.
This will be a rematch of the first leg of the SportPesa 7s, the Prinsloo 7s, which was held a few weeks back in Nakuru, where KCB came out on top against Kabras with a 19-12 win.
Therefore, as the Bankers seek their back-to-back 2026 SportPesa 7s title and their third this season, their rivals, on the other hand, will be chasing their second title and hoping to return to winning ways, having won once at the Dala 7s.
While Oilers have missed out on a place in the final once again, where they could have lifted the title after making it through to the semis in the three previous rounds, they will now look to finish strongly when they take on Falcons in the third-place playoff.
