Cape Verde defender Sidny Lopes Cabral has added another remarkable chapter to his incredible rise in world football after his stunning strike against Argentina was officially voted the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The 23-year-old Cape Verde international produced one of the defining moments of the tournament during his nation’s thrilling Round of 32 clash against the defending champions in Miami.
Although Cabo Verde eventually bowed out following a courageous 3-2 extra-time defeat, Lopes Cabral’s sensational effort ensured his name would forever be etched into World Cup history.

He revealed that even he struggled to believe what had happened after watching the ball find the back of the net.
“When I looked up and saw it heading for that top corner, I thought, ‘What the hell did I just do?’ I couldn’t believe it. I looked at my team-mates, everyone was screaming, hands on their heads, overjoyed.”
The defender explained that instinct immediately took over as emotions flooded through him.
“I started running without thinking. Then it hit me that I’d scored a spectacular goal in the World Cup. Everybody dreams of just scoring in the World Cup, but to score in this way, on such a big stage against such a big team, was amazing. I was really happy.”
The celebrations, however, brought an emotional twist for his family. Before kickoff, Lopes Cabral had promised both his mother and girlfriend that he would celebrate with them if he found the net. But the magnitude of the moment proved overwhelming.
“Before the game, I’d told my mom and my girlfriend that if I scored, I’d run over to them. When I got there, I saw my mom crying; she hadn’t even realized I was right there. Everyone was busy tending to her because she had fainted when I scored!”
The emotional scenes echoed one of football’s most memorable family moments, recalling how Lilian Thuram’s mother fainted after watching her son score twice for France during the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
As if lifting the award was not memorable enough, Lopes Cabral also received a message from one of his lifelong football idols ; Brazil and Real Madrid legend Marcelo.
“After the game, I got a message from Marcelo. He’s one of my biggest idols. I always admired him. He’s a left-back, plays with both feet, and had great technique.”
The former Real Madrid captain revealed that he had voted for Lopes Cabral’s effort as the tournament’s finest goal, leaving the Cape Verde international speechless.
“He told me he voted for my goal as the best of the tournament. I replied, ‘Thank you so much! I don’t know how to thank you. I’m so excited and honoured that you saw me play.’ And he said, ‘It was a pleasure watching you play; you’re really good.’ I was just like, ‘My word!’ I couldn’t believe it when I got his message.”
The award marks the latest milestone in one of football’s most inspiring journeys. Just three years ago, Lopes Cabral was playing in Germany’s fifth division while living in modest conditions, even using bin bags as makeshift curtains. Today, he is the owner of one of the most iconic goals in World Cup history.

“Before the World Cup, I gave an interview where I said it was my dream to score in this tournament. I could never have imagined that, by the end of it, my goal would be voted the Best Goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
