England may have booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway, but head coach Thomas Tuchel made it clear that qualification alone was not enough to satisfy him.
While many expected celebrations after Jude Bellingham’s match-winning brace secured England’s place in the last four, Tuchel instead delivered a brutally honest assessment of his team’s display, insisting there was little to celebrate about the performance itself.
“We made life very, very difficult for ourselves today,” Tuchel admitted after the match. “The result is fantastic, we’re in the last four. It’s amazing.I’m not happy with the performance. In every sense.”

The German tactician, who took charge of England with the expectation of ending the nation’s long wait for World Cup glory, believes his side fell well below the standards required to win the tournament despite getting the desired result.
“The commitment is there, but we made life very, very difficult for us in the way we played and how we played,” he said. “We were sloppy, we made tactical mistakes, we were not fast enough, not repetitive enough.We were lucky enough.”
England were forced to come from behind after Norway enjoyed long spells of dominance, particularly in the second half. The Scandinavians even had another goal ruled out and struck the crossbar, moments that underlined Tuchel’s frustrations with his team’s overall display.
Although England eventually found a way through thanks to Bellingham’s heroics in extra time, Tuchel insisted that relying on moments of brilliance rather than collective quality is not a sustainable formula as the tournament reaches its decisive stages.
“We will get better, we need to get better,” he said. “Now it’s celebrations. Now it’s taking it all in. We need everything to make a better performance.”
The England boss also dismissed suggestions that his side’s struggles were down to a lack of mentality, despite playing in sweltering Miami conditions with temperatures reportedly feeling above 40 degrees Celsius.
“Mentality?” Tuchel responded. “This is pure mentality now. How can you talk about mentality now? This is pure mentality.
“It’s not a mentality problem. It’s the quality of our game that’s the problem. We need to play better.”
Tuchel’s comments reflected the high standards he expects from a squad packed with world-class talent. Rather than allowing the result to mask the team’s shortcomings, he chose to focus on the areas that must improve if England are to lift the World Cup trophy.
England now advance to the semi-finals, where an even sterner challenge awaits, and Tuchel believes performances like the one against Norway will not be enough against the remaining contenders.
While qualification keeps the Three Lions’ dream alive, the German coach has made it abundantly clear that victories alone are not enough; only a significant improvement in the quality of England’s football will satisfy him as the tournament enters its final stages.
