Lionel Scaloni hails Argentina's fighting spirit after dramatic Egypt comeback

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni was overcome with emotion after watching his side produce a memorable comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and secure a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

The defending champions looked destined for elimination after falling two goals behind, but they showed remarkable resilience to claw their way back before sealing victory with a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

The emotional scenes at the final whistle reflected just how much the result meant to everyone connected with the team, including their head coach.

Scaloni admitted he struggled to contain his emotions after the match, revealing that the magnitude of the occasion affected both him and his players.

“I’m very emotional, the players call me the crybaby. I even teared up in the dressing room.

“But the players also feel many emotions, they are playing for their country, but this was unforgettable and one of the best moments.”

The Argentina boss reserved special praise for captain Lionel Messi, who bounced back from missing a first-half penalty to score a crucial equaliser that sparked his country’s remarkable revival.

Scaloni believes the veteran forward continues to thrive because he still enjoys every moment of playing football despite everything he has already achieved in the game.

“Messi showed it too. I don’t know if the emotion is on the same level as the World Cup final, I can’t be in Messi’s head, but he plays football for moments like this.

“He loves playing, feeling the ball, feeling the emotion and we want him to enjoy this for every final moment because once you retire, you regret it for the rest of your life.”

Scaloni also highlighted the character that has become the hallmark of his Argentina side, praising his players for refusing to surrender even when the odds were stacked against them.

He noted that, in moments of extreme pressure, determination and belief can outweigh tactical plans.

“I don’t know how many times you have this feeling of a team that never gives up in adversity, but that is this team and sometimes tactics are forgotten and you just go for it.”

The comeback victory not only secured Argentina’s place in the last eight but also reinforced the spirit that has defined Scaloni’s tenure. With a squad driven by resilience and inspired by Messi’s leadership, Argentina continue their World Cup journey carrying the belief that they can overcome any challenge that comes their way.
