Erling Haaland struck two late second-half goals as Norway pulled off one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, eliminating five-time champions Brazil with a 2-1 victory in New Jersey to book their first-ever quarter-final appearance.
The Manchester City sensation scored in his 14th consecutive international match, with his first goal arriving just 10 minutes before the end of normal time.
The goal had been coming, as Norway were piling on the pressure. Schjelderup looked dangerous from the moment he came on and delivered a delightful cross into the middle of the box.
Haaland got the better of his fierce rival Arsenal’s Gabriel and powered a header into the bottom corner.
As much as he had been kept quiet for most of the game, Haaland stepped up again in the 90th minute to seal the victory.
He picked up the ball outside Brazil’s penalty area and unleashed a thunderous strike into the far corner.
He hit it with such power that it guaranteed the win for the Norwegians, who were making their first appearance on the global stage in 28 years, back when their star man had not even been born.
Now with seven goals, Haaland is level at the top of the scoring charts alongside Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.
He will now be aiming to make his World Cup debut even more memorable when Norway face either co-hosts Mexico or England in Miami next week.
For Brazil, Neymar came off the bench to convert a late penalty, but it was not enough on a day when they created chances but failed to make them count.
It marked what could be Neymar’s final World Cup appearance, with the Brazilian star leaving the pitch in tears.
For the first time in almost 40 years, the Seleçao missed a penalty during normal play, excluding shootouts.
Bruno Guimaraes failed to convert from the spot in the first half after Kristoffer Ajer was penalised for tripping Matheus Cunha inside the area. Ajer may have got the slightest touch on the ball, but not enough to overturn the decision.
Guimaraes stuttered during his run-up before seeing his effort brilliantly saved by Nyland. The Norway goalkeeper guessed correctly to his left and comfortably denied the midfielder.
It only added to the heartbreak for the record champions, who arrived as favourites but were left stunned.
