USA vs Australia
  • The USA vs Australia FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D Matchday 2 fixture was played on Friday, June 19, at the Seattle stadium.
  • The USA managed to secure a 2-0 victory, with both goals netted in the first half- own goal by Cameron Burgess, before Alex Freeman added the second.
  • The Americans are through to the knockout stage after shattering a 96-year-old record of not winning back-to-back World Cup matches since 1930.

Co-hosts USA snapped a 96-year-old drought of failing to secure consecutive World Cup victories as they edged out Australia 2-0 on Friday night to punch their ticket to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

Having made their debut back in 1930 in Uruguay, that was the last time the USA managed to register consecutive victories, defeating Paraguay and Belgium to advance all the way to the semifinals.

Since then, across the years and into their 12th appearance in 2026, the Americans had never secured successive World Cup wins.

However, while hosting the global showpiece alongside Canada and Mexico under Mauricio Pochettino, the USA have finally ended that drought with two convincing victories.

After opening the tournament with a 4-1 rout of Paraguay, Friday’s triumph not only erased the long-standing record but also ensured they became the second nation in the 2026 edition to qualify for the knockout stage, joining Mexico.

The USA showed their intentions from the opening whistle, and by the 11th minute they had already drawn first blood.

Their relentless pressure forced an own goal for the second consecutive World Cup match.

Folarin Balogun, who is enjoying an outstanding tournament, beat his marker on the left flank, surged into the box, and squared the ball to Ricardo Pepi.

The unfortunate Cameron Burgess desperately attempted to intervene, but standing just three yards from his own goal, he inadvertently turned the ball into the net off his thigh.

It was a dominant first half from the cohosts, who controlled large spells of the contest, and they doubled their advantage before halftime.

A free kick found Sergino Dest on the edge of the flank, and his effort from outside the box took a deflection before being met by Alex Freeman, who timed his run perfectly and powered a header home.

Celebrations were briefly delayed as VAR reviewed the goal for a potential offside, but replays confirmed he was comfortably onside, allowing the 21-year-old to score on home soil and spark wild celebrations.

The second half saw Tony Popovic make several positive substitutions as Australia pushed for at least a draw.

Despite their improved display and sustained pressure, they could not find a breakthrough, nor even a consolation goal, and ultimately slipped to defeat.

Now sitting on three points from their opening victory against Turkey, the Socceroos will be aiming to bounce back next Friday when they face Paraguay in a crucial clash for a place in the Round of 32.

The USA, meanwhile, will wrap up their group-stage campaign on the same day with a showdown against Turkey.
