- Mara Sugar obtained interim orders challenging FKF decision to schedule fixture at Raila Odinga Stadium.
- The penultimate league fixture fate will be decided by the SDT on Tuesday.
- Gor Mahia will win the league if AFC Leopards fails to beat APS Bomet.
SportPesa League leaders Gor Mahia find themselves on the precipice of securing a historic 22nd top-flight title this weekend without even having to lace up their boots.
While K’Ogalo were originally scheduled to square off against Mara Sugar FC on Sunday in a potentially decisive penultimate fixture, an escalating off-pitch venue dispute has completely halted the match.
Despite their forced inactivity, the unique mathematics of the league table means that the record champions could still be officially crowned from the comfort of their couches by Sunday evening.

Mara Sugar vs Gor Mahia match halted amid escalating venue dispute
The dramatic twist emerged after the Sports Disputes Tribunal slammed the brakes on the highly anticipated encounter following an intense administrative tug-of-war between Mara Sugar and the FKF.
The fixture was initially set for Mara Sugar’s home turf at the Awendo Green Stadium, but authorities raised red flags over the venue’s capacity and security, given the thousands of traveling Gor Mahia fans expected to descend on the grounds for a coronation.
When Mara Sugar proposed moving the game to Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea, the federation flatly rejected the request, noting it was not a pre-registered alternative venue, and instead directed the match to be played at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
Objecting to what they termed an arbitrary relocation, Mara Sugar sought legal intervention, prompting the Sports Dispute Tribunal to issue an interim stay order and suspend all match operations until a formal hearing takes place on Tuesday, May 26.
How Gor Mahia could clinch the SportPesa League title without playing this weekend
Despite being stuck on 68 points following the postponement, Gor Mahia’s path to the championship remains very much alive this weekend due to the current standing of their perenial rivals, AFC Leopards.
Standing in second place with 64 points, Ingwe carry the heavy burden of keeping the title race alive when they take on APS Bomet on Sunday.
Because this will be the Leopards’ penultimate match of the season, they can only achieve a maximum ceiling of 70 points if they win their remaining two fixtures, leaving them completely vulnerable to the four-point gap established by the league leaders.
This mathematical reality means that Gor Mahia fans will be watching Sunday’s results with bated breath, knowing that any slip-up from their closest challengers will immediately end the race.
A defeat or a draw for AFC Leopards against APS Bomet will mathematically seal the SportPesa League title for K’Ogalo, as a loss caps the Leopards’ maximum possible reach at 67 points, while a draw leaves them at a virtual dead-end of 68 points against Gor Mahia’s vastly superior goal difference.
Only a definitive victory for the Leopards can push the title decision further down the line, in which case both teams will be forced to wait for the Sports Disputes Tribunal to deliver its ruling on Tuesday regarding when and where the suspended Gor Mahia match will be officially rescheduled to be decided on the pitch.
