The four-time 1,500m world champion Faith Kipyegon kicked off her 2026 outdoor season with a world-leading victory in the women’s 5000m at the Shanghai Diamond League, clocking 14:24.14 on Saturday afternoon.
Kipyegon broke away late from a big lead pack and held off Ethiopia’s duo; Likina Amebaw, who took second in 14:24.21, and Senayet Getachew, who grabbed third in 14:24.71 while Medina Eisa ended up fourth in 14:24.76.
The race showed serious depth behind Kipyegon, with seven women dipping under 14:33 and several athletes notching personal bests. The next closest Kenyan was Caroline Nyaga, who came ninth in 14:36.55.

Kipyegon’s mark was not near her former world record of 14:05.20, but it still set the early world lead in the Diamond League season and reinforced her spot as one of the sport’s elite distance runners.
“I feel so good. It was a solid race. A positive season opener. My main goal was to see where we stand and where we can tweak things and keep the same energy,” she said after the race.
Meanwhile, in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai delivered a masterclass performance setting a new meeting record and world lead after a dramatic sprint finish against Kenya’s Faith Cherotich.
Chemutai crossed the line in 8:51.47 in a race that went down to the final meter. In the process, she shattered the previous meeting record of 9:07.36 set by Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet in April 2024.

For the Kenyan, Cherotich was equally impressive, pushing Chemutai all the way to the line in one of the season’s most intense battles.
The youngster settled for second but still delivered a season-best 8:51.48, missing the win by just a fraction of a second. Tunisia’s Marwa Bouzayani completed the podium in 8:58.09 after a strong and consistent run.
