AFC Leopards pile more misery on Ulinzi Stars to keep title chase alive

AFC Leopards will be aiming to keep the pressure on 25/26 SportPesa League leaders Gor Mahia when they lock horns with struggling Ulinzi Stars in a rescheduled fixture set for Wednesday afternoon at Nyayo Stadium.

The highly anticipated clash kicks off at 4PM EAT with plenty at stake for both sides as the league campaign edges closer to the finish line.

While Ingwe are still chasing a first league crown in over 28 years, Ulinzi Stars are battling to preserve their top-flight status, setting the stage for a tense and competitive encounter in Nairobi.

AFC Leopards head into the fixture sitting second on the league table and know that victory would significantly reduce the gap between them and bitter rivals Gor Mahia, who currently lead the standings with 65 points, seven ahead of Ingwe.

Fred Ambani’s men revived their title ambitions over the weekend with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mara Sugar FC, a match that showcased their resilience and fighting spirit.

Goals from Hassan Beja and Victor Omune ensured maximum points for AFC Leopards and kept them firmly in the championship conversation.

Despite suffering two defeats in their last five league outings, AFC Leopards have still managed to win three matches during that run, underlining their ability to respond under pressure.

The club’s recent inconsistency may have slowed their momentum, but belief within the camp remains strong as they continue to push for a late title charge.

Coach Fred Ambani insists his side is not giving up on the race for the league title despite the points gap separating them from the summit.

“It is not yet over, we have to fight. Right now for the boys every game for us is like a final.”

On the opposite end of the table, Ulinzi Stars arrive at Nyayo Stadium desperate for points as they continue their fight against relegation.

The soldiers are currently 16th on the standings with 32 points from 30 matches, having registered eight wins, eight draws and fourteen defeats. They have scored 29 goals while conceding 34 this season.

However, their recent performances suggest a team unwilling to surrender without a fight. Ulinzi Stars have won three of their last five league matches, drawn one and lost one, showing signs of revival at a critical point in the season.

They are coming into the match after a goalless draw against Shabana, a result that extended their recent positive run. A win over AFC Leopards could lift them to 14th place with 35 points, potentially moving them two points above the relegation zone with only a few matches left to play.

Assistant coach Mohammed Hassan Rio believes the remaining fixtures will define the club’s future and has called on supporters to stand firmly behind the team.

“All our remaining matches are finals and we are going for maximum points. I urge our fans to rally behind us in these games so that we can make sure the club stays in the SportPesa League.”

The head-to-head record between the two sides paints the picture of a tightly contested rivalry. AFC Leopards claimed a 2-1 victory in the first-leg meeting earlier this season, but in the last five encounters both teams have managed two wins each while one match ended in a barren draw.

Notably, Ulinzi Stars secured their victories with identical 2-0 scorelines, highlighting their ability to trouble Ingwe on their day.

With the title race intensifying and the relegation battle equally fierce, today’s clash promises to deliver high intensity football, tactical battles and plenty of drama.

Meanwhile, in another SportPesa League fixture, Shaban FC will be looking to get back to winning ways as they visit Mar Sugar FC at the Awendo Green Stadium from 2pm.
