SportPesa League Coach of the Month – April Nominees

Francis Xavier – Mara Sugar FC

Mara Sugar FC head coach Francis Xavier earns his place among the nominees after orchestrating a near-flawless run built on defensive solidity and clinical execution.

The Sugar Millers approached April with a clear low-risk, high-reward setup, focusing on shape and structure.

They kicked off the month with a 1-1 draw against Nairobi United, where Alex Imbusia cancelled out the opposition to salvage a point. From there, Xavier’s charges shifted gears, grinding out three consecutive 1-0 victories.

Captain Drona Openda Langa stepped up with the winner against Posta Rangers, before Timothy Ndayala delivered against Kariobangi Sharks. Imbusia returned to seal the month with another decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Tusker FC.

Three clean sheets and just one goal conceded in four matches highlight a side that was compact, disciplined and difficult to break down.

-Nicholas Muyoti – Kenya Police FC

Nicholas Muyoti’s Kenya Police FC side mirrored defensive excellence throughout April, turning matches into tactical battles and emerging largely unscathed. Police recorded four clean sheets in four matches, underlining their defensive organization and composure being the side that has also conceded the least number of goals in the league.

They opened the month with a narrow 1-0 win over Tusker FC, courtesy of Yves Koutiama, before settling for a goalless stalemate against Mathare United.

The highlight of their campaign came in a commanding 3-0 victory over AFC Leopards, where Yves Koutiama, Eric Zakayo and Charles Ouma were all on target in the first half of the match at Nyayo Stadium.

A 0-0 draw against Shabana FC wrapped up their month, with Muyoti’s side conceding no goals and maintaining a well-drilled defensive line throughout.

Godfrey Oduor – Nairobi United

While others built from the back, Godfrey Oduor’s Nairobi United thrived on attacking football, making them one of the most exciting teams to watch in April. Nairobi United found the net 12 times in five matches, showcasing sharp movement, quick transitions and a lethal frontline.

Their month began with a 1-1 draw against Mara Sugar, Kevin Wangaya getting on the scoresheet, before a dominant 3-0 win over Shabana FC saw Duncan Omala, Michael Karamor and Mustapha Kizza all strike.

They followed it up with a 2-2 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz, again showing attacking depth through Karamor and Kizza. The standout performance came in a 4-2 demolition of Murang’a SEAL, inspired by a clinical hat-trick from Michael Karamor, with Wangaya adding another.

Oduor’s side then wrapped up April with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Mathare United, thanks to goals from Wangaya and Omala. Despite just one clean sheet, their attacking intent made them a constant threat.

Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo – APS Bomet FC

APS Bomet head coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo completes the shortlist after guiding his side to a perfect April record. Three matches, three wins, three clean sheets an impressive return that saw his side moving from the relegation zone.

APS Bomet began with a narrow 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars, with Antony Naibei scoring the decisive goal. They then produced a commanding 3-0 victory over Posta Rangers, with Maxwell Kubasu, Edward Masembe and Antony Naibei all getting on the scoresheet.

They wrapped up the month with yet another 1-0 win, this time against Sofapaka, courtesy of Philemon Nyakwakwa.

With each coach bringing a unique footballing philosophy, rnging from compact defending to expansive attacking play ; the battle for April’s top coaching honour is finely balanced. The winner will walk away with KSh 75,000 and a customized trophy courtesy of SportPesa.
