Kenyan Athlete John Korir has successfully defended his Boston Marathon title in a performance that will be remembered as one of the greatest displays of distance running in history.
Korir clocked a staggering 2:01:52 as he completely obliterated the previous course record of 2:03:02 set by Geoffrey Mutai in 2011.
By shaving over a minute off that long-standing mark on the world’s most challenging major course, Korir has officially become the fifth fastest marathoner of all time.
The entire men’s podium finished under the old course record, with Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu taking silver in 2:02:47 and Kenya’s Benson Kipruto securing third place in 2:02:50.

Millions John Korir will receive after smashing 15-year-old Boston Marathon course record
A huge financial award will follow as Korir is set to receive a total payout of $200,000 (approximately Ksh 25.6 million).
This includes the $150,000 winner’s money and a specialized bonus of USD 50,000 (Ksh 6.4 million) for setting the new Course Record.
This victory further cements the Korir family legacy in Boston, adding to the title won by his brother Wesley in 2012.
This historic back-to-back victory in Boston follows a remarkable career trajectory, including his maiden Major win at the 2024 Chicago Marathon and his first Boston triumph in 2025.
His 2026 success also builds on a dominant showing at the 2025 Valencia Marathon, where he clocked 2:02:24 to cement his place among the world’s elite.
By repeating his victory on the demanding Boston course, Korir has mirrored the legendary consistency he showed early in his career with consecutive wins at the Los Angeles Marathon in 2021 and 2022.

How much will Sharon Lokedi pocket after winning Boston Marathon 2026?
In the women’s category, Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi also successfully defended her Boston Marathon title, clocking a dominant time of 2:18:51 to secure her second consecutive victory on the world’s most famous course.
Lokedi finished roughly 90 seconds off the blistering course record of 2:17:22 which she established herself during her breakthrough win in 2025.
For her victory in the 2026 Boston Marathon, Lokedi will receive the standard winner’s prize of $150,000 which is approximately Ksh 19.2 million.
Since she finished outside the course record, she will not be eligible for the $50,000 course record bonus this year.
