Kenya Police FC and Mathare United shared the spoils after battling to a goalless draw in a rescheduled SportPesa League clash played at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Tuesday.

Both sides came into the match with changes to their starting XI, seeking a response after contrasting results in their previous outings.

Mathare United head coach John Kamau made three alterations from the side that lost 3-0 to Kakamega Homeboyz, handing starts to John Nyawir, Musa Masika, and Adams Nyambane.

On the other hand, Police FC tactician Nicholas Muyoti rang in five changes from the team that edged Tusker FC 1-0 in their last SportPesa League match, with Baraka Badi, Geoffrey Onyango, Tobias Otieno, Marvin Omondi, and Nana Asante all included in the starting lineup.

The match began at a frenetic pace, with Tobias Otieno testing the waters just 15 seconds in, his speculative long-range effort sailing wide.

Mathare responded early through Musa Masika, who showcased his pace and vision in the third minute, gliding past defenders before releasing a defense-splitting pass that lacked a finishing touch.

Masika remained a constant outlet for Mathare, delivering a dangerous free-kick in the fifth minute that found Ian Omondi, whose header drifted off target. The physicality of the contest quickly became evident, with both midfields engaged in intense duels and second-ball battles.

Police FC threatened in the 18th minute when Abud Omar’s set-piece delivery was whipped into the danger area by Alvin Mang’eni, only for Erick Zakayo’s goal-bound effort to be bravely blocked by Nyawir.

Moments later, Omar nearly caught goalkeeper Kevin Ouru off his line with a clever long-range free-kick, but the custodian recovered well to parry it away for a corner.

Mathare’s attacking patterns began to flow, and in the 26th minute, a slick interchange between Zakayo and Geoffrey Onyango created space on the flank, with Onyango’s cross picking out Yves Koutiama, whose header failed to trouble the target.

The match’s biggest talking point in the first half came in the 33rd minute when Police goalkeeper Daniel Ogembo brought down Mark Makwata in a one-on-one situation.

The referee opted for a yellow card, much to the disbelief of Mathare’s bench, who felt it warranted a straight red for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

The second half mirrored the first in intensity. Mathare came close in the 54th minute after a defensive lapse allowed Isaac Omweri to tee up Makwata, but the striker was denied at point-blank range.

Police responded almost immediately, with Kevin Ouru producing a brilliant piece of goalkeeping to deny Koutiama in a one-on-one situation.

The game’s clearest chance arrived in the 69th minute when Brian Ouru latched onto a swift counterattack and unleashed a powerful strike that rattled the upright, leaving the Police defense scrambling.

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of a breakthrough, introducing fresh legs to inject urgency into the final third. Despite late pressure, including a thunderous effort from Nyawir that struck the woodwork in the 75th minute, neither side could find the cutting edge.

The stalemate means both teams walk away with a point each in a match defined by tactical discipline, physical battles and resolute defending rather than attacking flair.
