Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia dropped vital points, denting their title hopes after Ibrahim Joshua’s solo strike powered Tusker FC to a stunning 1-0 win in a rescheduled SportPesa League clash played on Tuesday evening at Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga County.

A first-half strike from Joshua proved decisive as the Brewers handed K’Ogalo their fourth defeat of the season, cutting their lead at the summit to just two points ahead of arch-rivals AFC Leopards.

Gor Mahia came into the match knowing that a win would stretch their lead to five points, especially after dropping points in a goalless draw against Kariobangi Sharks.

Gor Mahia defeat to Tusker FC blows the SportPesa League title race wide open

Gor startedthe match brightly, attacking from the flanks with intent. In the third minute, Sharif Musa burst down the wing and whipped in a dangerous cross that lacked a finishing touch.

Moments later, Jackson Dwang combined well with Musa, but Tusker goalkeeper Pavelh Ndzila reacted sharply to deny the forward. The early pressure continued when Enock Morrison delivered a teasing free-kick that found Ebenezer Assifuah, whose powerful header was brilliantly saved by Ndzila.

Despite Gor Mahia’s early dominance, Tusker remained tactically disciplined, deploying a compact three-man defense that absorbed pressure and cut off supply lines.

Their patience paid off midway through the first half. A swift counterattack saw Ian Simiyu drive down the left before unleashing a powerful effort that was parried by Gad Mathews. The rebound fell kindly to Ibrahim Joshua, who calmly slotted home to give Tusker the lead ,his fourth goal of the campaign.

Gor Mahia had a golden chance to respond almost immediately when Assifuah found himself one-on-one with Ndzila, but the Tusker shot-stopper stood tall to preserve his side’s advantage. Further chances followed, with Musa and Assifuah both testing the Tusker defense, but the brewers held firm.

Tusker nearly doubled their lead before halftime through Erick Kapaito on the break, but the striker was flagged offside. At the break, Tusker carried a slender but crucial 1-0 lead.

The second half saw Gor Mahia push numbers forward, committing bodies in attack in search of an equalizer. However, Tusker’s defensive unitmarshalled by captain Charles Momanyi alongside Francis Oduor and Tom Teka remained resolute. Wing-backs Eugene Ikutwa and Servyl Akouala tracked back diligently, ensuring there was little space for Gor Mahia’s attackers to exploit.

Set-pieces offered K’Ogalo their best route back into the game. In the 50th minute, Morrison’s delivery from a free-kick found Assifuah again, but his header drifted narrowly wide.

Coach Charles Akonnor rang the changes, introducing fresh legs including Samuel Kapen and Ebenezer Aduk-Waw to inject urgency into the attack.

Despite sustained pressure, Tusker remained organized and disciplined, frustrating Gor Mahia with their compact shape and timely interceptions. The brewers saw out the match professionally, securing a vital win that not only boosts their campaign but also throws the title race wide open.

With this result, Gor Mahia’s lead at the top is now under serious threat ahead of their next fixture against Bandari FC, while AFC Leopards face Kenya Police FC before the two sides face off.All eyes now shift to the highly anticipated 99th Mashemeji Derby, which could prove decisive in the race for the crown.
