AFC Leopards edge Kariobangi Sharks to cut gap to 4 points behind Gor Mahia

AFC Leopards edged past Kariobangi Sharks with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Nyayo National Stadium, with winger Tyson Otieno haunting his former club to secure maximum points and keep Ingwe firmly in the SportPesa League title race.

The second-half strike ensured AFC Leopards reduced the gap on league leaders Gor Mahia to just four points, piling pressure on their arch-rivals as the season heads into the decisive stretch.

Ingwe started the match on the front foot, showing attacking intent from the opening minutes. In the 4th minute, Tyson Otieno delivered a teasing cross into the box searching for James Kinyanjui, but Sharks defender Kevin Otiala reacted quickly to intercept and clear the danger.

A minute later, Samuel Ssenyonjo led another promising move for AFC Leopards, though goalkeeper Sebastian Wekesa was alert to gather comfortably.

Kariobangi Sharks responded in the eighth minute with their first corner of the game, taken short before AFC Leopards recovered possession.

The visitors continued to build through the flanks, with Bebeto Ronald Sichenje and Ssenyonjo trying to unlock the Sharks defense, but Ian Karani and Kevin Otiala stood firm at the back.

The Sharks gradually gained momentum, enjoying a fluid passing rhythm and creating several half-chances. David Majak nearly broke the deadlock in the 14th minute with a header that forced AFC Leopards goalkeeper James Ssetuba into an awkward save using his legs.

Victor Ngume and Humphrey Aroko also combined well in midfield, stretching Ingwe’s defensive shape with quick interchanges and crosses into the danger area.

Despite Kariobangi Sharks looking the more dangerous side in the first half, AFC Leopards remained organized and disciplined defensively.

Frederick Alushula squandered a golden opportunity in the 41st minute when he skied his effort with the goal at his mercy, while Aroko’s cleverly worked free kick just before halftime failed to trouble Ssetuba.

The second half saw AFC Leopards grow in confidence, with Tyson Otieno and James Kinyanjui increasingly influential in the final third.

Their persistence paid off in the 58th minute when Kinyanjui threaded a well-timed pass into Otieno’s path, and the winger calmly curled a beautiful strike into the far right corner, leaving Wekesa rooted to the spot.

Coach Fred Ambani made tactical adjustments in a bid to chase the game, introducing fresh legs including Victor Omune to add attacking impetus.

Kariobangi Sharks pushed forward in search of an equalizer, and a quick passing move between Razel Omondi and Humphrey Aroko created a chance for Steve Mbulere in the 75th minute, but the cross into the box failed to find a finishing touch.

AFC Leopards nearly doubled their advantage late in the match when Kelly Madada outmuscled his marker and squared the ball to Bonface Munyendo in the 89th minute, but the forward missed a clear opportunity with an open net at his mercy.

Ingwe held on in the closing minutes, showing defensive resilience and game management to secure a crucial victory that keeps their title hopes alive while deepening Kariobangi Sharks’ relegation worries.

The victory sees AFC Leopards tighten their grip on second place and move within touching distance of the summit, while Kariobangi Sharks are left to regroup quickly as they continue their fight for survival in the league.
